DIY Event Decoration Tips and Tricks

You don’t have to be an artist, designer or handy-person to paint the perfect venue-shaped canvas, but it does help to have a ‘blank canvas’ venue and a vision for your event. The first things to consider are the size, style and setting of your event. These details will determine your venue vision.

Whether you’re planning a harbour-side extravaganza in Sydney or a super relaxed team event in one of Melbourne’s hip creative hubs, you’ll want to choose decorations that create an ambience to suit your crowd and the desired vibe. If you give it some thought you might even have all the pieces for the perfect ambient puzzle lying around at home.

Lights are the first and arguably most important piece of this puzzle. Have fairy lights hiding in the shed gathering cobwebs? A bunch of IKEA tea-light candles waiting for your next dinner party? Or big old  ‘vintage’ lamps that your grandma won’t let you get rid of? Perfect! These can be used to build the base for your space. Grandma’s lamps will lend themselves to a dimly lit prohibition-themed evening, while those old fairy lights will add ambience for a daytime event in a beautiful light filled industrial warehouse.

Next, you’ll want some fruit, flowers or something else fancy for added flair. Fresh flowers are beautiful but can be expensive and tricky to transport. Your local $2 shop will have some killer faux floral options that can be disguised as the real deal in that well-lit base space that you’ve already created. If your chosen venue is truly a blank-canvas space like a marquee or warehouse then you’ll have the freedom to arrange furniture to fill your space. This can be as simple as grabbing some milk crates and astro-turf from the hardware store down the road.

For a more casual sit-down dinner, add a square of squishy astro-turf to your crates to transform them into seats and drape a piece of material over others to use as a tables. Not quite fancy enough? Opt for a stand-up, cocktail style event where the only pieces of furniture you’ll need are dressed-up stacks of milk crates in the form of a bar.

DIY doesn’t have to be complicated, it really is as easy as having a vision, a whole lot of imagination and a few hands to gather all the pieces!
