Our Favourite Cheap and Revitalising Day-Off Activities

Switching off from work is important not just for your mental health and relationships, but your productivity in the office too. These ideas for revitalising activities will help you return to work refreshed, without breaking the bank. You can also do these alone or turn them into a social afternoon with friends - they are accessible to everyone since they’re all either free or inexpensive.

  1. Make the most of your libraries

Reading is one of the most revitalising activities possible, taking your mind off of work stress whether you enjoy escapist fiction or prefer autobiographies and nonfiction business guides.

And there’s nothing like the weight of a physical book in your hand, so if it’s been awhile since you’ve made it through more than a few pages of something, pop by your local library and talk to a librarian. They are absolute experts on all things books and will have their favourite titles ready to recommend to you, no matter your niche.

  1. Cooking/ baking

Venture a little out of your comfort zone and make something special in the kitchen. It can be for you or family and friends, or for you all to enjoy together.

Taking time to prepare something delicious with no distractions is therapeutic and helps you pay attention to what you put in your body.

  1. Be around nature

This might be a morning-only activity as we near the hottest summer days, but most of us live surprisingly close to some great parks and nature trails without even realising it. It might take a little drive – which can also be relaxing with the right music and people.

  1. Beach Day

We’re certainly seeing the right weather for it! If you’re lucky enough to live in driving distance of the beach, you don’t need a special occasion to take advantage of Australia’s glorious oceans.

Pack a bag with snacks, books and a massive umbrella and head to the beach. Beaches are great fun by yourself or with a group – if you are going with friends be sure to pack a beach ball.  Enjoy the sand between your toes, and that sea breeze that can only mean you’re on holiday.

  1. Social/ recreational sports

Social sports shouldn’t end when your PE classes at school do. Lately, there’s been a trend towards working adults of all ages taking part in recreational sports with friends or as a way to make friends.

Team sports with a splash of healthy competition are a great way to keep healthy, let out some steam and energise your mind for your return to work. If joining a local club for tennis, squash, basketball isn’t in your budget, check online to see if your neighbourhood meets up for any recreational sports, or meet some friends at the park’s basketball court for a game each week.

  1. Yoga/ Pilates

If team sports aren’t really your thing, try to take an hour in your day off to get in some individual exercise like yoga or Pilates. Yoga teachers often say that the focus on breathing in yoga makes the lesson’s exercises a massage for the body – and that’s without forking out $1 a minute for your local masseuse.

With the plethora of free resources made by professional yoga instructors online, there’s no reason to miss out if you can’t attend classes.
