We recently stayed at InterContinental Hayman Island and overall had a wonderful experience, particularly in terms of the island itself and the hotel facilities. The setting is absolutely stunning and our room was amazing — beautifully appointed and very comfortable once we finally accessed it. The service on the boat transfer to the island was excellent. Check-in was initially handled on the boat to the island by a gentleman from Finland who had only been working at the hotel for around a month. Unfortunately, we didn’t catch his name, but he was incredibly welcoming, friendly, and professional — a true asset to the hotel and a fantastic first impression. However, after being told when we arrived at the hotel we would be emailed or called when our room was ready, we heard nothing. By 15:30 we had to go back to reception ourselves, only to be told the room had been ready. Unlike other guests, we were not shown to our room or offered any assistance, which felt inconsistent and disappointing. We were very well looked after on our first night at Bam Bam by a staff member from Northampton. His service was excellent and set a really positive tone at the start of our stay. Unfortunately, this wasn’t consistent across all dining experiences. We dined at the Italian restaurant and found the food to be bland and tasteless, which was especially disappointing given the premium prices charged. The island itself is breathtaking and the trip to Whitehaven Beach is an absolute must. Amber and Shiv were fantastic guides on that trip and really made the experience special. Unfortunately, the main thing that let our stay down was the service, particularly around the pool areas. On two separate occasions when we went to the pool bar for lunch, we had to ask for menus and then again to order drinks and food, while other guests were being served immediately without issue. On another occasion, we sat by the infinity pool for around 20 minutes waiting to be served before eventually having to go up ourselves to ask for a menu, and then again to place a drink order. We were then told by a staff member that poolside drink service stops at 5pm; however, families who were in the pool at the same time continued to be served. When we questioned this, the response was that the waitress had been “looking after that family all week.” BIG FAT QUESTION MARK ON THAT RESPONSE???? While that may be the case, all guests are staying at the hotel and paying the same premium prices and should be looked after the same. As two young women, the situation left us feeling overlooked and uncomfortable. Finally, at checkout we weren’t asked whether we had enjoyed our stay or about our experience at all, which felt like a missed opportunity and further reinforced the lack of genuine customer service. What is particularly disappointing is that when going to post this review, we noticed many similar reviews mentioning poor and inconsistent service dating back several months. It’s disheartening to see that this feedback does not appear to have been addressed, especially as service is one of the most important aspects of staying at a luxury resort. Overall, the hotel itself is beautiful and the location is truly special. We did enjoy aspects of our stay, but the inconsistent service and lack of attention to guest experience really detracted from it. This is particularly sad because the resort and island are incredible, yet these service issues significantly let it down, the service level is definitely not what you expect from a 5* hotel and leave us unsure whether we would return.
We had a wonderful stay in the pool access room. The room is clean and spacious next to a gigantic nice pool. Beach is super clean and swimmable. Hotel staff are young and nice in general. We tried both private dining choices with wine pairings included. Wine selection was great and worth of trying even though it looks pricy. There are a lot to do on the island or from the island. The best of two worlds heli tour was the highlight of our trip.
My husband and I are on night 4 out of 5 of the Hayman Island leg of our honeymoon. To be honest we were slightly hesitant based on some of the other reviews we have seen, but…….. we are so glad we booked Hayman island! We were greeted by a lovely staff member at Hamilton island airport who helped us when we could not locate one of our bags. From there we were taken to the lovely Hayman island boat that took us to the island. This boat trip was a wonderful way to start our trip with free bubbles, water, juice and beer. Once we got to the island we were driven to reception where we were greeted so professionally, efficiently and 5 star like! Our bags were taken to our room for us- very efficiently. As soon as you walk through reception you are facing the most picturesque view and it awoke excitement to explore more of the island and what the resort has to offer. Our room….. was spectacular! We have a pool access suite and it is stunning! We love the pool access, the design features, the automatic curtains, lighting, fans, the bath, the massive shower head, there is not one thing we didn’t like! The food….. the continental breakfast is spectacular! One room for cold and room temp items and another for hot foods. It was insane! I looked forward to breakfast everyday! You are greeted by staff who take you to a table and immediately take your coffee order. I also thoroughly enjoyed dinners, I didn’t have a bad meal! The paddle boarding and kayaks are great.we had lots of fun paddling at our own leisure! Cleanliness is honestly great! Our room was great, the outdoor areas are great and visibly being maintained by staff. Some have commented on the pool not being clean, but this was not our experience at all! Service - all the staff are so kind and happy to help! While sometimes the service is slow (what’s the rush anyway - you’re on island time) the staff are great and make the wait worth it. I would not deter anyone from staying here, it has been spectacular and such a treat!
Paradise! Our wonderful 6 night stay was incredible. Service outstanding. We were lucky enough to stay in a beautiful pool access suite, overlooking the iconic Hayman Island pool. We have loved our stay. Our snorkeling adventure to the Blue Pearl Bay 2 was 5 mins away in a speedboat & provided us with heaps of sea life, in particular “Nemo’s” hideaway - with little Nemo’s hiding and then appearing ❤️. We love this iconic Australian destination Hayman Island. Thank you 🙏
Pick-up from The Sweet Spot in Airlie Beach was great — grab one of their cinnamon rolls before boarding the luxurious boat. Arrival at Hayman Island Marina is smooth, and the buggy ride is a nice touch. But after drop-off, you’re on your own. Check-in was slow: I waited 30 minutes while one staff member handled everything, and no one offered water or checked in. For the room rates, that’s disappointing. The breakfast “voucher” situation was confusing — first $35 per person, then a comped breakfast “worth $35”, and yet the restaurant told us to have the buffet. Both staff were strangely fixated on that exact number. Despite submitting my details days earlier, the hotel didn’t have my IHG number on file. As a Platinum Elite and Ambassador member, this was frustrating. They eventually added it and said they’d “consider” an upgrade. I also had to proactively ask about the F&B credit included with my Amex booking — $142 — which was never explained upfront. Room wasn’t ready (fair), so we went to the pool. No greeting, no water, and no towels anywhere. I called concierge twice. It took 30+ minutes to get towels, and during one call a staff member actually said, “Are you going to do it yourself? We’re busy with lunch service.” Completely unacceptable. The duty manager later apologised, saying she thought I was a staff member — but speaking to anyone like that is shocking. The upgrade to the pool suite was excellent — perfect layout, cabana, and separate living area for my teenage son. Really appreciated this part. But asking for a US adapter (listed as “on request” on the website) was met with “we don’t have any, buy one at the gift shop.” Room service pizza at 3pm took over an hour. They apologised and comped it, which was appreciated. We tried to book the fishing trip — a major Whitsundays activity — but it was full until after our checkout. To the hotels’s credit, after initially saying no, they scheduled an overflow cruise the following day. Even with this nice gesture there was confusion. At first they said my 15 year old son could go on his own. Then they said he couldn’t. I would have to come too and pay the same price even though I’m not fishing. By this point I’m exhausted. Ok, whatever. Turndown service? It’s listed as included, but apparently it’s “on request” — and no one told us. They could only offer it for the next day because “it’s already finished.” Again, everything feels like you have to ask twice. On the positive side: the room and the physical resort are beautiful. The setting is world-class. But the service consistently falls short of what a five-star resort — and these room rates — should deliver. Staff seem undertrained and overwhelmed, and there’s a general sense that no one is actually running the operation. Also they are slow to respond to maintenance requests. The fan makes a creaking sound and the door is so stiff the ceiling paint is falling off. We are yet to have someone attend to it. In short: stunning island, lovely hard product, but the experience doesn’t match the price tag. With stronger leadership and service standards, it could be exceptional — but at the moment, it’s not close.
