Arrived on a wet Friday for lunch. Very welcoming staff. I ordered a large Shiraz and a rare rump steak with salad and fries. Very good steak, no gristle and cooked as requested. Excellent salad that had a hint of something I could not identify, but very tasty none the less. Compliments to the chef and excellent service!
Overall horrible experience. I have never been more astounded by the food value, rudeness of the workers, and lack of facilities. I went here to have steak recently and not only was the steak extremely overpriced for a pub (it was $35 whereas normal pubs charge around $20), the size of the steak was definitely not 250g. I home cook steak regularly and also measure the meat portions, and the size served at this pub was probably 120g. It was also cooked medium and not medium-rare. I can get past the steak, it is not that serious of an issue. The real issue was the facilities and disrespectful workers, causing the writing of this review. There is one bathroom for females in the whole building, as the female bathroom is closed off and has a “leakage” and the unisex is the only bathroom available. When I went to the bathroom, only a few minutes later there was a worker pounding on the door saying “Hurry up. You have been in there for 5 minutes.” because there were other customers waiting to use the bathroom and getting reasonably frustrated. But 5 minutes? Do you hear yourself? Why are the workers being so aggressive and angry because someone was in the bathroom for 5 minutes? Regardless, I apologised for being in the bathroom for 5 minutes and was met with an eye roll. Additionally, there was NO toilet paper. Would not recommend. Awful experience and ruined the rest of the night.
I'm here at 3:30 on a Thursday afternoon. It's quiet but that's understandable. Device was immediate and polite. The position is outstanding near buses and trams. The river and the ocean are both in walking distance. It's a Grand old hotel that still survives, thank goodness.
Vibe was casual, live music was great, staff friendly … but unfortunately there was a horrid sewer smell wafting through the pub now and again that staff said was the result of a recent plumbing issue. Staff trying to mask it with spray, but we had to move outside. Local drunk bothering us but manager was super patient and he eventually moved on. Food was amazing! Hope they get rid of the smell soon!
Upon a visit to Newcastle, popped in here for a quick meal… expecting the usual pub affair I was pleasantly surprised with everything this pub is! But the food is the best part! Well done guys! The Nepalese dumplings are a standout and the snittys are the bomb! Great service to boot! 👏 3 day visit to Newy and I visited twice! Just had to return.
