7 Alfred nails the “do one thing brilliantly” philosophy. The concept is refreshingly simple — one signature dish, executed with real consistency and care — and it works. The 220g O’Connor Superior Grass Fed Scotch Fillet is cooked exactly as ordered, beautifully charred on the outside with a rich, tender centre. The beef tallow shoestring fries are the perfect partner — thin, golden, and properly crisp, clearly cooked in good fat rather than generic oil. You get to choose your sauce (I went peppercorn — silky, punchy, not overdone), and with veal jus, chimichurri and umami butter also on offer, there’s enough variety to keep repeat visits interesting. The green leaf salad on the side was a lovely, well-dressed contrast to the richness of the steak and fries — fresh, light, and exactly what the dish needed to feel balanced rather than heavy. The cocktails were excellent too, well-balanced and a great way to start the meal before the wine list (which is genuinely impressive — a broad, well-curated selection by the glass and bottle). Service was warm, attentive and unpretentious — the kind of hospitality that makes a simple concept feel special. The room itself is stylish without being try-hard: marble tables, warm lighting, great energy. For a restaurant with essentially one dish on the menu, 7 Alfred proves that focus beats breadth when the execution is this good. Highly recommend for a proper steak-frites night out in the CBD.

7 Alfred had some mixed reviews, so I came in around 5:30. I took a table and saw there was only one main menu option, the steak frites for $48, with a salad for $8 and a Coke Zero for $7. I didn’t realize the total would come to $63 when I just touched and go, but the main focus was the food, and it was incredibly good. I asked and found out they are part of the Rockpool Group, and honestly, I enjoyed my scotch fillet steak here more than I have at the main venue or similar quality restaurants. The quality for $48 matched or even exceeded the price, and the serving of fries was very generous. I couldn’t even finish them all. The peppercorn sauce came with a creamy mushroom base that was well balanced and not overpowered by the peppercorns, which can often dominate that style of sauce. The salad was fresh and tasty, providing a good balance to the steak. The service was also quite good. Overall, the experience was really enjoyable, and while steak can be hit or miss depending on how it is cooked, mine was seriously good on my visit.

A restaurant I visited with very little expectation and hardly any research — I just knew they served steak, and that was enough to convince me. Visiting on a bustling Friday night, I was instantly impressed the moment I walked in. The space is grand yet inviting, with a striking staircase, soaring ceilings and a dining room that feels like stepping into a classic New York-style diner crossed with an old European brasserie. What stood out just as much as the design was the service. Despite how busy the restaurant was, everything felt seamless and organised. We were seated immediately, given menus and water straight away, and our orders were taken quickly by the friendly staff. The food arrived surprisingly fast too — one of the perks of a venue that focuses on doing one main thing exceptionally well. The menu is refreshingly simple: a 220g O’Connor Superior Grass Fed Scotch Fillet served with fries for $48, with your choice of sauce included. And honestly, it was one of the best steaks I’ve had in Melbourne. Perfectly cooked, full of flavour and exactly the kind of meal that reminds you why simplicity works. Aside from the steak, the menu only offers a salad and dessert, which somehow makes the whole experience even more appealing. We ended up ordering dessert as well and it was the perfect way to finish the night. The wine list was compact but very well curated, with several bottles around the $50 mark that felt reasonably priced and paired perfectly with the meal. Overall, such a great Friday night dinner spot — ideal for both small catch-ups and larger group dinners. A restaurant that keeps things simple, executes it exceptionally well and delivers a genuinely memorable dining experience. I’ll definitely be back.

I went to 7 Alfred and ordered the steak, which is essentially the centrepiece of the menu. I had it with chimichurri and also tried the peppercorn sauce. The chimichurri had that fresh, sharp kick that cuts through the richness beautifully, while the peppercorn was smooth, classic and comforting. The steak itself was fantastic. Cooked properly, full of flavour, no unnecessary extras. Just a confident plate of food done right. The fries were crisp and generous, and even the simple rocket salad with vinaigrette was fresh and balanced. Nothing complicated, just executed well. Service was efficient and friendly, the decor warm and relaxed without trying too hard. For the quality, it’s genuinely good value for money. I’ll be back. No question.

I saw a story on ch9 Postcards show a few weeks ago and liked the idea that it has one item on the menu. Steak frites. Specifically a 220 gram O'Connor Superior Grass Fed Scotch Fillet, with Beef Tallow shoestring fries. With or without salad. And two desserts. I arrived at 5pm on a Saturday post a theatre matinee. I didn't have a reservation but was seated immediately. I ordered the steak frites with umami butter plus veal jus on the side for the fries. Steak was beautifully cooked. Tender and medium rare with melt in the mouth fatty bits. Perfect size 220gms for me. Butter was flavoursome and generous - not stingy. Chips were hand cut with skin and perfectly cooked - crispy outside and soft inside. Veal Jus was a good rich sharp flavour. Cocktail (Fabiocello Spritz - Melbourne Limoncello, Prosecco & soda) was lemony and sharp as I like it. I was too full for dessert so I will have that another day. Service was friendly and attentive. I forgot to note down names but 3 different ladies looked after me throughout my arrival and dining. Ambiance - when I arrived at 5pm there were perhaps 6 or 7 tables occupied. By the time I left at 6.15pm it was filling up. Accessibility - there are a few steps at the street entrance and no railing so I needed to grip the concrete wall for balance. i use a walking stick. I forgot to ask later if there was a more accessible entrance.
