35 South Wharf Promenade, South Wharf VIC 3006, Australia
Restaurant
•Melbourne's funkiest Thai restaurant! It’s hard to walk past Southwharf’s BangPop and not be drawn in. The fresh and delicious Thai smells, the bright colours, the inviting modern interior, and the bikes that line the exterior. It all seems to gesticulate wildly at you, telling you to come on in for a good time. Not just a name that describes the look and feel and taste of the popular restaurant specialising in Thai street food, the titular “bang” actually translates to mean a village situated on a stream. Which this is. If nothing else, BangPop boasts one hell of a view of the Yarra and the city skyline. But then, it does boast much more. Delicious Thai dishes designed for sharing, a bustling atmosphere, and a large, cheery industrial interior. Put it this way: BangPop suits functions, whether a large and raucous dinner, a unique launch party or corporate drinks. BangPop is found along Southwharf Promenade, overlooking the Yarra and the city. It’s easiest to walk or catch a tram down Spencer Street, then wander down by the water. Southern Cross is the nearest train station.

I had a fantastic experience here, a place that brings together bold Thai flavours, a lively atmosphere, and one of the best riverside dining spots in Melbourne. The food was outstanding, fresh, vibrant, and full of authentic Thai character. Every dish felt thoughtfully prepared, and the quality definitely matched the price. It’s the kind of menu where you can taste the balance of spice, sweetness, and freshness in every bite. The ambience is energetic and colourful, with that signature BangPop personality. Whether you’re indoors enjoying the bright décor or outside soaking up the view, the place has a fun, upbeat vibe that makes the whole experience memorable. The outdoor seating overlooking the Yarra River is a highlight. It’s relaxing, scenic, and perfect for a long lunch, a casual dinner, or even just drinks with friends. The staff were friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, which added to the overall comfort. Accessibility is another plus, easy to reach, plenty of nearby parking, and right in the heart of South Wharf, making it convenient for both locals and visitors. One thing to keep in mind: BangPop is popular. During peak hours, it can get fully booked, and you might wait around 15 minutes or more for a table. But honestly, the food and atmosphere make the wait worthwhile. Overall, BangPop delivers a vibrant dining experience with great food, friendly service, and unbeatable riverside ambience. A wonderful spot to revisit and recommend.
This is the second time I’ve been to this restaurant and it was as good as the first time, if not better. Managed to sit outside and the Melbourne winter sun was lovely. Lunchtime special is perfect…average $22 per serving and the serving is generous. Highly recommend the chicken red curry! Service is really friendly and meals were served up fast … highly recommend 👌🏼
Had lunch here on my hubby's birthday. Good food, grest ambience and fantastic location, just next to Yaara river. Fish cake and chicken ribs were great entree. Mains were good too but was looking a bit more in taste. Overall, it was great.
I’ve been here quite a few times, and while the vibe is genuinely great and the service has always been good, the food has really let it down for me. The last few visits, the dishes felt quite bland and lacked the depth of flavour you’d expect. It’s disappointing because the place has so much going for it in terms of atmosphere and overall experience. Unfortunately, it hasn’t lived up to expectations when it comes to the food, and after multiple tries, I don’t think I’ll be returning.
BangPop is a great spot for Thai food by the river in South Wharf and next to DFO, with a fun atmosphere and a menu that’s perfect for sharing. We ordered the pork belly and Massaman curry with rice, and both dishes were delicious. The pork belly was really tasty and packed with flavour, while the Massaman curry was rich, creamy and comforting, with plenty of flavour without being overwhelming. The rice was the perfect accompaniment to the curry. I really liked that the menu has a good mix of Thai street food, curries, wok dishes and rice options, with plenty of dishes designed to share. The current menu also features their slow-roasted pork belly with gai lan, garlic, chilli and crispy shallots, as well as a Massaman curry with potatoes, shallots and peanuts.
