•Clare isn’t the new kid around the block. She knows the area like the back of her hand, turning neighbours into friends and tourists into locals
Here, community and creativity run deep, and true to Clare’s humble beginnings, her down to earth nature is disarmingly friendly. Stretching across two iconic heritage-listed buildings, The Old Clare Hotel is more than just a place to crash.
The Old Clare by Ode Hotels has been carefully curated with curious travellers in mind.
Located in Chippendale, in the land of art galleries, design studios, cafés and restaurants, it’s a place designed to keep the wanderlust going, an invitation to explore where you’ll leave feeling both rested and inspired.

I booked the Old Clare for the last couple of days of a NZ-Sydney trip. I had anticipated a bit of luxury in the centre of Sydney to round off a great trip. On arrival, the cluttered reception was completely empty- I've never walked into a 5* before without someone at the counter. I called the number provided at the desk to no avail. 20 mins later a very stressed guy appeared having acted as a bellboy and now desk manager. The room was spacious and designed without warmth or feeling; however the amenities were there, including a Nespresso machine, mini bar and decent shower. Although there was some storage space, most was unusable.. of the two available drawers they'd filled with a blanket, and the wardrobe was packed with ironing board, safe, hairdryer etc which meant not much room for our possessions. The pool is fine for laps but very exposed to diners/drinkers and consistently in the shade. The location is spectacular, right on Spice Alley and walking distance to Korea Town/Thai Town etc. We had breakfast both days at nearby Concrete Jungle which is 10/10. We did not want to risk eating at the Old Clare as the staff generally acted like they didn't care and we expected that to be revealed in the cooking too. For a 5* I would've expected much much better, I wouldn't recommend staying at the Old Clare unless you needed somewhere to lay your head for the night- it's definitely not a destination and the staff and service need an overhaul.
HI can’t rate the hotel highly enough. … we have needed to come to Sydney twice recently and was looking for just the right place. Wow. - if you haven’t stayed at the old Clare you need to. I booked for the first visit - and came back because I could not fault a thing. …. I had a few higher / probably annoying needs - BUT The staff have been seriously amazing. THey have been supportive and helpful - I could not have asked for more. .. The room was amazing / awesome vibe in the rooms I ended up staying in / the beds and linens were all so lovely / showers / shampoos. - everything has been brilliant Located right next to amazing places to eat and drink but the bar downstairs is equally fantastic. So you don’t really need to leave …. I seriously highly recommend you make up a reason the stay.
This was a hard one to review as the rooms are so special and stunning. The bar and location are fantastic. The decor and vibe are excellent. But unfortunately we booked for one night only and they told us about 3 days in advance that we could only use the rooftop pool (on an extremely hot day) from 7pm on the day we checked in. Disappointing, as we had been so looking forward to their rooftop pool, but we got over it and they kindly upgraded us. However, the reason they closed the rooftop was for a pool party function, which was insanely loud from our room until past 8pm. We were so ready for a staycation and it has been so far from relaxing with obnoxious bass blasting. When you book a luxury experience for yourself and your partner you don't expect to feel on edge when existing in your room. Really upsetting to be honest. No pool, no relaxation, and quite a bit skinter.
I can see some reviews are consistent with the feedback, hopefully this can help with improvement, because this hotel looks so nice and should be a great experience for people. * Rooms need maybe a good detail, some stains on couch and marks that could be fixed quite easily * The clear glass from bedroom to bathroom could use a curtain * Attention needs to be given to little things, like leaving three towels when a booking is made for three people * The reception staff need a bit of a refresher on friendly customer service. Just handing a room card is not the full job. Mention the pool, the restaurant, which way the lift is etc * If front desk is reluctant to talk to customers, have information in the room book. Ours was an empty folder and no phone in room to contact reception * Having no option to pay cash at the bar, but then adding a surcharge is I believe illegal
As a repeat customer to the hotel (first visited in 2019 and enjoyed it) — I am even more impressed on my second visit. The hotel management went out of their way to help us after a long and perilous travel to Australia — both being flexible with our travel and supportive and understanding on landing. The dining at the hotel is top notch, the upstairs pool a great sunset hang, and the rooms immaculately designed. Loved it so much we extended our stay longer :)
