Reviews for State Library Victoria

The State Library Victoria is much more than just a library. It's one of Melbourne's most beautiful and iconic buildings. The architecture is stunning, and every room has its own unique charm, making it a wonderful place to explore. The highlight of our visit was the magnificent La Trobe Reading Room. Standing beneath its beautiful dome and seeing the circular arrangement of desks was truly breathtaking. It's easy to understand why it's one of Melbourne's most photographed interiors. There are also fascinating exhibitions, historical collections, and quiet spaces where you can sit, read, or simply admire the surroundings. Best of all, entry is free, making it a fantastic attraction for visitors. Whether you love books, history, architecture, or photography, the State Library Victoria is a must visit. It's a peaceful and inspiring place that should be on every Melbourne itinerary.

The State Library Victoria is an architectural marvel, but its family facilities are a true standout. The children's area is massive, playful, and incredibly comfortable, perfect for a long, relaxing break with kids. I was deeply impressed by the diversity of the collection, with books organized not only by themes but also by a wide variety of languages, making it easy for children from different backgrounds to find something special. Beyond the famous dome, take time to read the informative plaques about the building’s decorative details. Also, don't miss the galleries; the exhibitions are surprising and world-class, offering a quiet escape from the busier Instagram spots. A masterpiece of culture and inclusion in the heart of Melbourne!

This place is wonderful. The architecture looks so grandeur. From the outside you can tell there will be much interesting things happening. They have outdoor giant chess for people to mingle about. The entrace are guarded by both statues of Joan or Arc and St. George and the Dragon. Inside you will find a tons of books, magazine, paper, you name it with a load of table and chairs to sit upon. They have reading room and a grand hall which left me in awe. It was amazing, just see it for yourself. No wonder some said this is one of the best library in the world. And the best thing is, this place is free. A must-visit attraction for tourist in Melbourne.

State Library Victoria is an impressive space designed for real use—people actually come here to study and work, not just visit. The interior is wide, open, and very well-organized. High ceilings and large reading areas create a sense of space that feels both quiet and focused. It’s not just visually appealing—it’s functional. A place where you can sit for hours, stay productive, and enjoy a calm, structured environment.

Its a bit surprising to me that inside the building i could not feel that it is from the 1854 ! Still, it is a great place to see ! I was also surprised that the main reading/learning area was open to public so anyone can enter and take photos (I guess quite disturbing for students). And, funny things, nearly nobody was reading any book 😀 - laptops everywhere 😀.
