Reviews for Melbourne Zoo

Had an awesome day out at Melbourne zoo. Great place for the family! Managed to get round in 5 hours but even then we thought we moved fast. Would definitely recommend a two day visit if you want to read everything and enjoy it. Looking at getting the pass and also doing the camping under the stars! Will be back!

We love the zoo but as we travel from Bendigo it takes 2 hours by car or 2.5 hours by train to get here meaning we have to leave extremely early (7am) if we want to see everything the zoo has to offer in 1 day - even then you’ll probably miss a lot of talks or the keeper kids zone if you’re busy and have young kids. The price is only worth it for us since we became zoo members so it means we make the effort to go more than 3 times a year. We will hopefully use our membership to travel to Werribee soon. Probably the only thing that annoys me is that when habitats are closed or the animals are missing there is no announcement or warning before making the long walk around the habitat which can be frustrating with tired little people. The carousel, playground and keeper kids indoor play zone are incredible additions. You can care for sick animals or go on safari while having a snack or feeding a bub out of the sun. It makes me sad to see animals in captivity especially pacing tigers and monkeys but I like knowing the proceeds from my entry price contribute to wildlife conservation projects. Sad that the prices for animal encounters have gone up by 10% in a matter of months as I have to pay to accompany my 12 year old on her experience which is her birthday present but I understand unsupervised children around animals can cause issues. Love that we can see her favourite animal - Miishka the snow leopard up close as it’s one of the only opportunities she will ever have to see this gorgeous elusive cat up close. We recently travelled to see the Bluey show and was impressed by the interactive games with the audience and how upbeat the performers were on such a hot day but disappointed that the Bluey and Bingo characters basically just stand there on stage and don’t actually talk - there’s no voiceover or anything which isn’t as exciting for little ones. Glad I didn’t pay the extra $$$ for front row.

Love the layout of the zoo! So easy to get around. Enough places to eat, sit down, plenty of bathrooms around as well. Very children friendly! There was a Carousel and face painting which are great for the little ones.

This zoo is fantastic! The exhibits are thoughtfully designed, and there’s a great diversity of animals from all over the world. I was especially impressed by how clean and well-kept the facilities were. Definitely worth the visit!

A great selection of animals and well-designed exhibits, a lot of attention into giving guests s good chance to see the animals, many of the burrows and such had windows to view the animals even when they’re sleeping. The open lemur enclosure is fantastic, you can see them right up close (but please do still keep your distance). Got a great look at the tiger, though it seemed quite agitated, it was pacing around by two of the windows to its exhibit and growling where people were crowding around, could do with some sort of one way glass perhaps. The signs for animals were also not super informative, and the cycling electronic signs in the reptile house were not a great idea.
