Overall, I had a great experience. I booked a three-night stay. While the lighting in the room was quite dark and the hotel felt more like a four-star rather than a five-star, the location was excellent and I enjoyed my stay overall. Room was clean and nice. The hotel dining food was also good for lunch.
This was our first stay, we are locals and had always thought this place was something special, perhaps it was but now it is something average. Shower has mould, furnishings are pretty but useless, impossible to do makeup in the evening due to poor placement of over mirror lighting. Sleep was ok but we got hot during the night View of lake was lovely but it was also overlooking a lower floor balcony. From parking you have to walk through the bar/ restaurant with your bags to check in. Overall it’s about a 4 star hotel, we had a nice enough time for one night and it was fantastically placed for Palace cinema. Staff were very friendly and helpful
Service was fantastic, in particular Jonathan who went over and above to try and ensure our stay was more comfortable. Hotel was cool and arty in design - Suites are bespoke and there's a lot of pictures! May be better suited to an under 45s type of customer. Futon feel beds a bit uncomfy over multiple nights. Bathroom in Suites is huge with bath plus a 2 person shower. A few pros and cons to consider.
Ovolo Canberra should not be rated 5-star. It should be rated 3-star for the following reasons: 1. We (there were two of us) checked in online prior to arrival at hotel. At reception, we had to wait, because there was only 1 receptionist at the counter attending to another guest. About 5 minutes later, a second receptionist (she was polite) came and gave us our key. Note: To be fair, the free drinks were still provided to us, even if we came in late (around 6:30 PM). 2. The room was too dark. If you go to sleep straight away, that would be fine. 3. If you are only 5 feet tall, do not stay at Ovolo Canberra, because their sink is gonna be too high for you, unless they have other rooms with a sink that is suitable for shorter people. 3. There was no wardrobe/closet and no bathrobes/dressing gowns and slippers for the two of us. When I checked other platforms like Wotif, these things were mentioned under "Room amenities" (we booked the Horizon Large King Bed room). These were the main reasons why I chose to try staying at Ovolo Canberra. Wotif (and other platforms such as Agoda, etc.) and Ovolo’s website charged the same rate for our room. I just decided to book direct (via Ovolo's website) to avail of the 5% discount. Housekeeping told me that our room does not include bathrobes and slippers, and she also told me that even if she would like to give us bathrobes, there were none available (they ran out). This never happened to any of those 5-star hotels we booked before. Housekeeping staff offered to give us slippers, but I was already annoyed, so I refused to accept the slippers without bathrobes. 4. The hotel sent us a WhatsApp welcome message and suggested to reply to that message if there's anything they can do to make our stay a little less ordinary. When I replied (regarding bathrobes and slippers as mentioned in number 3 above), they did not reply. When I rang guest services twice, nobody answered. Housekeeping picked up our call, though. 5. I included breakfast in our booking. The breakfast was okay, but the amount was a rip-off. Our breakfast did not equate to $25.50 per person that I paid for. From the menu, we could only order a few choices. Our choice was only $22.50 per person. We wouldn’t want to eat food that we don’t like for breakfast just to reach the $25.50 per person spending limit.
Service was impeccable and the location was amazing - close to all major attractions. I was expecting a bit more for the price - my room was small and there was no desk. Also, everything is so dark and my room was giving dungeon. They booked me in on the 1st floor with only a small window looking up into a back courtyard. I felt as though I was in some one's ( well appointed) basement. The hallways are also so dark that I needed my phone to read the room number. Not great for people like me with low vision. The resturant is ok but the drinks were very expensive. Over $14 for a schooner of mid-strength beer. This time, which is rare, the mini bar was cheaper. Overall, I was pleased with my stay.
