Would stay here again and recommend to everyone wanting a great value, and surprisingly charming blend of old fashioned style and super clean modernity. Great food in the bar downstairs. Room small but bed huge and comfortable.
What a find! A Jewell in the heart of Sydney city in a refurbished, beautifully so, modern hotel. Check-in personnel were very efficient whilst being polite and friendly. Nearby food courts and minutes away walk from harbour ferries. Breakfast choices are plentiful and very reasonably priced. Rooms are generously sized, clean and adjoining ensuite bathroom well sized and designed. The Great Southern Hotel is well named, Great.
We just stayed there for the second time while attending the Sydney cricket test. It's a lovely art deco building that has kept a lot of its charm through renovations over the years. The location is ideal - right next to Chinatown, close to Central station, and across the road from the light rail. Rooms are clean and quiet if on the small side. (Tip: if you find yourself in one of the really small rooms don't hesitate to ask to be moved, they are very obliging.) Continental and hot breakfasts are available at modest prices. Staff were most helpful. And the cost is very reasonable, you could easily pay 50% or more elsewhere. It's now become our go to place when staying in Sydney.
The hotel is in a great location, and the customer service was commendable. The staff were friendly and helpful. However, the room was just average, and the mattress was a major letdown. Every time my partner turned over, it felt like being on a trampoline, which made it difficult to get a good night's sleep. The breakfast was disappointing, especially for a 4-star hotel. The options were very limited which felt more like a 2-star experience. It might be better to explore nearby restaurants for a more satisfying breakfast.
The staff are amazing. The rooms are old but functional. The bar staff are great. We had a small issue with the aircon on the next to last night and were moved to another room the minute we mentioned it. I don't think we could have picked a better location for our Sydney stay. 15 min walk to the Maritime museum (my husband was joining his ship from there. 20 meters to the tram to Circular Quay. 30 meters to paddies market. Right in the heart of China town. We will definately be back. I don't think We would consider any other place for future Sydney stays. And thanks Robbie for the lovely personal tour.
