I’m a local to the area and have always admired this restaurant from the outside. The vibe and presentation are classy, chic, yet warm and inviting — so when my friend came down from Brisbane to visit, I took the opportunity to finally try it. Unfortunately, I left feeling very disappointed. I’m not sure if it was poor timing, lack of organisation, or being understaffed, but the experience didn’t live up to the high expectations or the price tag. We were greeted by a lovely gentleman who went out of his way to find us a spot in the courtyard, even though it was quite busy with what seemed to be a birthday celebration. It was a thoughtful gesture and a promising start. However, the service quickly went downhill from there. We waited so long for our meals that I had to call over three different staff members on separate occasions to ask where our food was. The first dish took around half an hour to arrive — and while it was tasty, it was just a burrata with tomatoes and olive oil. I couldn’t help but wonder why something so simple took so long. The staff overall came across as quite snobby and uptight. The restaurant feels like it’s trying too hard to be something exclusive, but it ends up feeling pretentious instead. The simplicity and quality of the food are overshadowed by the sourness of the service. A bit more warmth and genuine hospitality would completely change the experience. Sadly, I won’t be returning, but I genuinely wish this place all the best. It has so much potential — just needs a few tweaks to elevate it from below average to one of the true hotspots of the East.
Had dinner at Bar Milano in Maroubra and there were definitely some highlights. The pasta and wine deals are appealing, and the staff were lovely! We started with a mix of entree’s like the arancini balls, calamari, octopus & burrata and they were all delicious and well-prepared. May main dish was carbonara, which I was really looking forward to, sadly didn’t quite hit the mark. It lacks a bit of depth in flavour. Also, the prices felt a bit steep for the portion sizes, especially for the entrees. Overall, a nice atmosphere and great starters, but a few things missed the mark for me.
We celebrated my sons 21st birthday here. Ruta the events organiser helped bring the birthday together. She is amazing! Lorenzo hosted us for the evening and was fabulous. Everything came together in such a beautiful restaurant. The vibe was perfect!
Maroubra beach is really lacking nice eateries - it's full of a few of sub par cafes and one pub, so not much choice. We were excited when Bar Milano arrived and we have been a few times. Our most recent visit a few days back was not so great. The food and drinks are good but not amazing-I've yet to have a dish where it's made me really want to go back and have it again. The staff member who greeted us at the door was very friendly. But we had two young children and I think it would have been nice to be offered high chairs. Instead we got two of them ourselves and they were really dirty and we needed to clean them. We also found our empty plates weren't being taken away (for reference, it was not busy), when the waiter came to put down a new dish, he expected us to pile plates on top of each other so he could put it down. It resulted in one of the dishes smashing on the floor beside my Child's highchair - not great at all and could have resulted in an injury. Not as important but in a bit more of an upmarket establishment, I think it's nice for water to be poured at the table, instead they put down the glasses and a jug and walked off. Again, not essential but I think it makes customers feel as if they are somewhere more fancy.
Bar Milano is a hidden gem in Maroubra. The food is fresh and always delicious, cocktails are spot on, and the friendly service makes you feel right at home. A unique spot that brings Italian charm to the coast and it is definitely worth a visit!
