•Flying Fish, like so many other dining destinations in Sydney, boasts a prime view of Sydney Harbour Bridge and city lights in the distance. What makes Flying Fish such an enduringly popular and renowned spot is the mix of spectacular views plus high quality, Chef Hatted cuisine.
With Executive Chef Stephen Seckold at the kitchen’s helm, Flying Fish has garnered a reputation for being one of Sydney’s premier locations for amazing seafood, in a town that definitely knows one or two things about food.Flying Fish is a warm and welcoming space, at least in part as a result of the rustic interior.
All wooden walls and old steel, it’s a nod to the area’s maritime and industrial history. Which is nice, but we just think it looks really good. Large windows let diners savour the postcard-worthy view, both from the restaurant proper, and from Little Fish, the establishment’s stand-alone bar.For those on the hunt for a function venue within Flying Fish’s elegant and rustic walls, there are a number of options to choose from. The venue’s private function spot, the Arcadia Room, is found upstairs on the first floor. A good pick for product launches and private celebrations, it boasts antique timber walls and beams within which groups of up to 40 can enjoy dinner or cocktails.
The Wine Room lends itself to slightly larger celebrations, being popular with event birthdays and weddings. The Wine Room isn’t so much a room as it is a two-level loft surrounded by frosted glass walls, adjoining a stylish terrace. Thirdly, the Flying Fish’s Raw Bar is the dedicated sushi space. Sushi master Kensuke Yada is at the helm, conducting masterclasses, or giving diners a journey through the world of sushi and sashimi.
Flying Fish is found at the very tip of Jones Bay Wharf, at all times drinking in its almost ridiculous view of Sydney’s lights. It’s about a ten minute drive from the centre of Sydney’s CBD, or you could catch a light rail to the Casino stop, with Pyrmont Bay as the closest Ferry stop.

Give this place a miss. Around $100 pp, not sure how it got famous. Nothing bad about the food but similar to your local cafe or diner that charges $20. No views to speak of. Serving mains very slow, portions are small and stingy. No table cloths. No intimacy, table too big. Decor and table setting almost non existent and bland. Fine dining prices for a product that can be found at any RSL club.
We had the best night at Flying Fish! When I booked I advised that it was my daughter’s birthday that day. Upon arrival we were seated at a table with a beautiful view next to the window and the waitress immediately acknowledged my daughter’s birthday. We chose the pre theatre menu and were not disappointed. The food was delicious and very filling. After dinner we were surprised with a free dessert and a lit candle on top. Such a lovely gesture! My daughter was so happy! Thank you!
Flying Fish is a standout choice for seafood lovers and an ideal dining destination for visitors to The Star. The interiors are stylish and modern, blending natural timber and stone to create a sophisticated atmosphere. The attention to detail is impressive, from the ambient table lamps—an award-winning design we discovered through a quick search—to the breathtaking views of the bay, which speak for themselves. Our experience started with some minor service issues. Despite having a reservation, our table wasn’t ready, and we were asked to wait at the bar, where no seating was available. Additionally, after requesting to see the set menus, we experienced a long delay and were only provided the three-course menu, despite knowing a four-course option was available. Thankfully, once we were assigned a waiter, the service significantly improved, with attentive care and efficient food delivery. We opted for the four-course menu, which began with a trio of snacks: salted fish croquette, Venus Bay prawn toast, and zucchini flowers. While all were enjoyable, the zucchini flowers stood out as exceptional. For entrées, the Hiroshima kingfish was flavorful, but the bay lobster ravioli stole the show, delivering a burst of umami. We also added the sashimi selection, which featured fresh fish but was let down by the choice of a light soy-based dipping sauce. While it paired well with the salmon, it lacked depth for the kingfish and tuna. At $38 for nine pieces, it also felt overpriced. For mains, the snapper dish was a clear winner. Served two ways, with a delicious curry sauce as a base, it showcased creativity and flavor. The chuck rib, while tender, felt underwhelming when paired with just a few mushrooms and left us wanting more. Sides were generous in portion but lacked refinement. The chips were overly salty and not crunchy, even for someone who enjoys bold seasoning. The salad featured a lovely vinaigrette but was hindered by oversized lettuce leaves, making it awkward to eat. Desserts provided a strong finish to the meal, offering a fine-dining twist on classic favorites. The “wattlemisu” had a delightful crunch, but the strawberry Eton mess was the highlight, transforming a simple dish into something extraordinary. Despite a few shortcomings, Flying Fish impresses with its stunning ambiance, flavorful dishes, and creative approach to seafood, making it a worthwhile dining experience.
Flying Fish location is a great option for pre-show dinner or visiting The Star. The kingfish crudo and blue swimmer crab fettuccine were great options. the kingfish crudo had a kick from the jalopenos and the fettuccine's creamy tomato sauce really complimented the sweetness of the crab. The 'Smoke Me' cocktail is a must for fans of tequila and passionfruit. Good services, bookings are a must as it gets busy.
Was very disappointed in my dinner experience. Had the pre theatre dinner and left hungry and unsatisfied. Kingfish was inedible as it was insanely salty, tortellini was delicious. Zucchini flowers were good. Fish was average but tiny portion and was sitting on flavourless cabbage. Sides were chips and lettuce? Really underwhelming. Chips came out stone cold and they forgot the lettuce side. For $75 per head it fell well short of expectations. Went to Messina after to fill up on icecream. For a bill of $200 it was absolutely disappointing and not worth the money. Would not go back. Service was ok and view was great.
