I went on an adventure to the historic and newly refurbished Palace Hotel in Camberwell and it absolutely did not disappoint. Downstairs is spacious, with fireplace and big TV, but upstairs is where the magic is. Literally a level up, it’s beautiful function space and bar area adorned with historic photos highlighting the history of the building and the people who ran it, particularly paying homage to the women in hospitality. Of note is one of the many architectural choices that paid off.. seeing into the bell tower! If you want standard pub grub - these guys do it well. But if you want an unexpected, exceptional culinary experience then you need the small plates menu. I can not express how much of a delight it was eating my way through this menu. Crafted by state executive chef Tony Moss it incorporates First Nation flavours, exceptional produce, and suppliers in a unique connected way. The little buratta is had made by That’s Amore and is adorned with stewed Davidson plum and fennel with house made lavosh. The crispy halloumi is texturally delightful and served with a Tasmanian pepper-berry honey and kaffir lime. The lamb ribs are cooked to perfection and complimented with a coffee and wattle-seed glaze. Wagyu skewers were so tender with brilliant complex flavours of black garlic and saltbush. I opted for the endive salad, which was a good call, the whole shaved apples, radish, and herbs with a zesty vinegarette dressing was perfectly balanced. And, the chips. Clean oil, skin on with solo that deserves its own shout out. On top of all this, the service is genuine, with every team member so proud to share the history of the venue.
4 4 lunch Jan 26 all happy to see the fabulous new Palace! had a little wander beautiful ! until it wasn't found out there are no lifts or stair chairs for guests with disabilities or other issues of mobility ! .... Staff were fabulous especially LAUREN in the gf bar !! 👏🏼👏🏼food was ok ambiance ok ... sorry Palace you lost us if there are no lifts or other ways to get to functions on the top floor for people with injuries or disabilities ......
Wonderful newly renovated hotel, great for an ale or casual dining. Ambience of old pub maintained inc hidden walled off stair case closed off since 1922 now open in classed off area for public viewing
We went on 24 Dec, the second time since it reopened. The pork cutlet is a winner. Food portions sizes are decent. A lot of the old and simple favourites are gone however and I’ve found the food in general is overcooked, especially the chips. The biggest let down however is the service. There’s a lovely guy with an Irish accent who seems to be the only one doing anything. Service is slow, orders are regularly wrong or ignored. Cocktails are limited, expensive and small. It took nearly 40 mins to receive 2 espresso martinis ordered on the app after it didn’t print at the bar and even after going up to the bar to check, one came out. We had to explain we had ordered two. Went elsewhere for a further drink as it’s just too slow and expensive. A main and two drinks each came to $140.
Newly renovated heritage pub established in 1888. Lovely ambience, great food and cocktails. Service is top notch!
