It seems to be a national trust protected building. Place has has been recently touched up but standards of are slipping. Staff in the dining room and bar were lovely. Strange that there is no dinner in their dining room or room service on Sundays or Mondays. Not 4 star by any means.
Nice old buildings full of Character, rooms had no aircon (only heating) but the room didn't need it, it seemed to keep a nice temp throughput our stay. Place made up of the main building and a series of outbuildings or bungalows, where we were. Not ideal with yucky weather, when walking to the restpurant or reception. The hotel itslef is about a 20-30min walk to the CBD, which is a hike, but only about 10mins or so to Elizabeth St where there were plenty of cafes and eating options, and the local Stare Cinema. There was no gym on site, but you could get a fob and visit the local gym, also about a 10min walk away. Not convenient but OK for the junkies and this place included an indoor heated pool, nice. The room had only tv entertainment, anything else u were expected to cast from your own device/acct which was a surprise. Service was excellent and staff very helpful with everything.
The only real question is; would I stay there again? Erh, no. I have said repeatedly, do not let architects design rooms, particularly bathrooms. A nice big room with high ceilings(+), large bathroom (+), bench with sink (+), but (many negatives), bed with huge foot end which obscures the TV, the TV is cheap & really not worth even trying to use so woeful is the menu, NO powerpoints either side of the bed head (how can any serious hotel not have phone charging points near the bedhead), the room is not private because the windows open out to pedestrians, even the bathroom (no frosted glass, only hard to use blinds), there was a great opportunity to screen off the dunny easily, but no, full excrement smell is there for all to enjoy, the bench is too high and the sink is very "architectural" meaning it is too small and wrongly oriented, another guest welcome not used is the electric kettle in a cupboard and not on the bench. (Why make it hard for tired guests), I could go on but will finish with the shower, aah the shower, yet another example of design by an architect - looks impressive but practicality nosedives; no shelf for your own soap, crappy tile work, mould on the grout, an ineffective fan that doubles for dunny duty, a useless towel rail, ........... Like so many hotels, it falls short by poor design and execution. The staff were good, the restaurant nice but food taste experience pedestrian (but so are the tastes of many guests, to be fair), but the bed was comfortable.
Love the building, love the high ceilings in the reception and dining areas. The location is just beautiful. Gorgeous town, great views everywhere you look. It's a really pretty town.
They failed to confirm a booking which I had attempted to cancel a month earlier due to change of plans (and believed it was cancelled). I explained this to them, and they could not have cared less. Their lack of user friendly systems and absence of a proactive booking management is apparently entirely my problem, and they charged me a punitive $233 for it. Show some empathy and accountability. I only ever received one confirmation of my booking and no response to my complaint. Yet EVT can spam me every day with marketing. Make money first, care for customers later. Avoid avoid AVOID!
