Stepping into NSW Parliament House for the 2026 Australia & New Zealand Shipping & Logistics Conference Gala Dinner felt like walking through living history! Atmosphere & Heritage From the moment you step inside, the grandeur and rich history of the space take over. The historic architecture—complete with classic archways, stately portraits, and rich heritage decor—creates an unforgettable setting. It was a treat to wander through the public sections, including the impressive gallery corridor filled with vibrant artwork. It’s an absolute must-visit landmark in Sydney. Entertainment & Program The lineup for the evening was top-tier. Comedian Lehmo set a lively, high-energy tone right from the start, keeping the entire room in stitches. The evening balanced great humor with meaningful insights from ministerial speeches, all complimented by wonderful live acoustic music in the background. Dining & Fine Details The culinary experience was top-notch: The Menu: Every course was delicious, but the desserts—especially the spiced apple crumble with vanilla ice cream and the silky panna cotta—stole the show. The Touches: A subtle, luxurious touch that didn't go unnoticed was the official NSW Parliament crest embossed across the china, teacups, and cutlery. An impeccably organized venue with warm service, rich heritage, and unmatched charm. Highly recommended for any grand occasion! #hikingdiarybyabid
NSW Parliament’s Macquarie Street core began as the northern wing of Macquarie’s Rum Hospital, opened in 1816 and occupied by the Legislative Council from 1829. As a partly elected Council expanded in the 1840s, the former hospital accommodation gained a larger chamber. Bicameral government in 1856 required another physical answer: a prefabricated iron upper chamber bought from Melbourne and assembled beside the older fabric. Modern accommodation later rose behind the retained frontage, extending the pattern of adding parliamentary authority to inherited space. The building records the growth of representative government, yet that authority also passed protection laws extending state control over Aboriginal communities and children.
A great insight to the workings of our State Parliament, informative guides made the tour very interesting... Recommend following up with High Tea in the lovely dinning room... 👌
Located at 6 Macquarie Street, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia 🇦🇺 This was my first time visiting and it was so worth it. We had High Tea at the restaurant (Strangers Restaurant). This was definitely delicious 😋 but I found it to be quite expensive for what you get. $70 was what we paid and the scones I don’t believe were freshly baked. The rest was wonderful. The staff were so welcoming and attentive. Nothing was too much trouble. We were also able to tour the lower and upper house. Our guides were so kind to give our group a personal tour of both places, while explaining how each worked and contributing some fascinating narratives. The paintings 🖼️ throughout the building are so beautiful and was lovely to see them. There’s several tours you can participate in and I would definitely recommend a visit. It’s a beautiful historic building where New South Wales laws are written and decided. It houses the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council and our state finances are controlled here. The tours are also FREE. You have to book though. You can actually watch the proceedings of parliament on a sitting day. To get into the building, you have to go through a bit of security and to get into the upper and lower house, you have to check your bags. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. Highly recommend. Thumbs up! 👍👍
