Reviews for The Vanguard

We had an amazing evening at The Vanguard. The food was outstanding - the polenta so fine and tasty, the wild boar lasagne, chickpeas and saltbush spliffs flavoursome and perfectly cooked and the wattleseed flan divine. All served speedily by attentive staff. Jeff Lang and band topped off the night - incredible performers. We'll be back.

Nice venue for live performances. The staff were really friendly and helped out whenever needed. Me and my friends felt safe and was very satisfied how the performances was well co-ordinated. Lighting and sound was ideal enough for me and my friends to still hear and each other and have a conversation. Overall, we were really satisfied with our experience here and will definitely check out future performances and this venue.

I want to love this venue but I didn’t. It’s cute and looks like it could be good. The menu on the website is misleading and they only had 2 out of eight items available to snack on, no proper food. The stage is small and I couldn’t see performers. The acoustics are not great. I would not like to go back again.

Good music, culinary disaster. As of November 2024, the renovated Vanguard in Newtown is a compact, well-designed venue for dinner-and-show events. The major problem is the food, which was inadequate in quantity and embarrassing in quality. Included in the ticket price of $75/head, the meal consisted of about four mussels each, presented in salty water you could not drink even if you had been given a spoon, then spaghetti with butter-cheese sauce and a spoonful of wilted spinach. The menu said "caesar salad", but we had to ask for that, and we got about 6 cos lettuce leaves with dressing per capita, no bacon, croutons, shaved cheese, etc. The online example menu lead us to expect a decent meal, and probably amounts to false advertising. The drinks were OK, but many Newtown bars provide better-made cocktails for the same price. The musicians were excellent. The sound quality and mix were average for pub-style venues---you needed to know the song to follow the lyrics despite the singer almost swallowing the mike.

Have always loved the Vanguard and five stars for the new fit-out. BUT the food offerings are poor and the website quite misleading in suggesting one can eat ‘delectable bites’. All that is offered is seemingly a couple of supermarket level snacks which were largely out of stock within an hour of doors. So instead it was Lord of the Flies set-up as the below-par offerings quickly disappeared. It was either a case of miss the show or be forced to have dinner down the road at 10pm if possible.
