The State Library of New South Wales is an absolute gem in the heart of Sydney. I wasn’t expecting to spend as much time as I did, but this place completely drew me in. The building itself is stunning—especially the historic Mitchell Wing with its grand interiors, classic reading rooms, and beautiful architectural details. It has this quiet, timeless atmosphere that makes you want to sit, read, reflect, or just take in your surroundings. There’s so much more to this library than just books. The exhibitions are thoughtfully curated and incredibly engaging. I explored a mix of historical displays, original manuscripts, art, and cultural exhibits that offered deep insights into Australian history and identity. It’s a place where you can learn something new, see something beautiful, and really connect with the stories of the past. The spaces are welcoming, whether you're there to study, browse, or simply enjoy a peaceful break in the middle of the city. The staff were helpful and knowledgeable, and the attached café was a nice bonus—a great spot to pause with a coffee before diving back in. This isn’t just a library—it’s a cultural destination. Whether you're into history, literature, architecture, or just want a calm and inspiring space, the State Library delivers. Highly recommended for both locals and visitors. I’ll definitely be coming back!

I absolutely loved visiting the State Library! I found that there was so much to do there. It is not just a place to study and read books. There are a number of levels and many rooms to explore. One part of the library contains an art gallery, while another has historical Australian and British artefacts. At the time of my visit, the World Press photography competition was showing too. I found it so fascinating. Some of the displays and exhibitions change periodically, and entry is all free. I could easily have spent so much more time here and am keen to go back.

Amazing place where you can find history The map on the floor of the entry way is a glimpse into the past and the ways that map-making has advanced in the last two centuries Steeped in history and with an ever changing gallery, the library is a great place to go to experience some local flavor. The main library room is absolutely breath taking, especially if you actually manage to make it inside. If you are here at Sydney the a must visit place This is definitely a must see if you're trying to experience Sydney's history

I think if people ask what to do when going on holidays I’ll tell them go to state libraries! Cause guess what? They’re free! And they’re full of such amazing things! The exhibition they had for the World Press Photos was so moving. I wiiiiiish I could have checked out more in the library. Even if you live in Sydney, go check it out!

I was just killing time in Sydney so I ventured in to the State Library of NSW. It’s a stunning sandstone building in a lovely location opposite the Sydney Botanical Gardens. It’s beautifully quiet inside. Lots of small art exhibitions upstairs in the galleries. I love exploring buildings like this overseas but this one in my home town is lovely and it’s free.
