Stayed here for four nights over the Australia F1 Grand Prix weekend. The room we had was quite old and dated - scuff marks on the wall, carpet looked/felt a bit dirty etc. We stayed four nights, our room was only serviced once during that time - despite putting hanger requesting service on the door. Breakfast options were minimal and the hot food was luke warm at best. This certainly did not meet the standards I was expecting from this hotel chain.

I enjoyed a two night mid-week stay on business at the Mercure North Melbourne during a hot spell. The room was comfortable large and cool. Good climate control. I enjoy dining at the Polo Restaurant the quality of the meals is always consistent here and it has a nice quiet atmosphere with views over the city and suburb. Dined in both nights.

WARNING ⚠️ careful how you book. A family member and myself were due to travel for a 3 night stay from interstate for Peter Mac cancer treatment. Less than 24hrs before travel oncologist advised against that treatment as urgent treatment was required in our home state. An attempt was made to cancel booking, this was not permitted as booking (made direct on hotel website) was a no cancellation. Whilst I realise no cancellation means no cancellation. The charge was over $800 for the three nights! I was told "it has been absorbed into the business". Cancer is tough for anyone especially when young children are left at home. We have since had 2 trips for treatment. A little compassion would go a long way. Staff members were all polite.

To start with I was extremely appreciative of the customer service I was provided and was provided with a free upgrade. I booked a standard king room for 3 nights. We were given room 205 and was extremely disappointed with what we walked into. The room was like a backpackers and was very small and cramped. The layout was back to front, walk through the door and the beds instantly on the right and kitchenette and cupboard on the left, small window directly opposite the door and the bathroom was located on the far right. Not at all as the room is displayed on the website. The walls were scratched and fridge was old and dented and marks al over it. To call this a 4 star hotel is a mistake. We got into the upgraded room and was much happier however this hotel is needing a lot of work to get anywhere near a 4 star rating. Carpet in the hallways are a trip hazard, the lift is ancient, complete with vintage Bakerlite emergency telephone. The staff are absolutely lovely however no amount of customer service can make up for poorly designed and poorly maintained rooms.

With a name of Mercure and 4 stars I was expecting luxury, but it is not so. I do not think this is worth 4 stars at all. The website states parking, but does not mention it is an extra $25 on top of the room, so that was a surprise when we got there. There was no TV remote and reception said to just use the buttons on the side, these are unable to get the Foxtel and cable channels as stated on the website so I can’t say if those channels worked or not, they were not available to us. There is no mini bar in the rooms as the website states, but there is room service, we did not use the room service. The buffet breakfast is not worth $25, the coffee is undrinkable, there were no tables available until someone else left, it’s only open until 9am, you are better off ordering room service, or going to find a cafe nearby. The girl looking after the buffet was absolutely lovely though. No fan in the bathroom, it gets quite stuffy. Curtains don’t close properly, so bright light awakens. The rooms are quite dated and could use a freshen up. However the beds were good, it is a good location, close to trams and hospitals. It was convenient for what we needed it for.
