We called in for coffee and scones after our 3 hour drive to Canberra. The scones arrived some time before the coffee and tea. We had almost finished the scones by the time the drinks arrived. I had ordered a half strength flat white with no froth. I was stunned to see the small cup size and to see the level of coffee was on the low side of half the cup. I asked why the cup was half full and the waitress asked if I would like some more, to which I replied yes, a full cup please. She returned with a full cup but now the coffee was barely warm, let alone hot. She disappeared again with my cup to return with another coffee, this time with an inch plus of froth, so in essence, two thirds of a tiny cup of coffee... marginally better than the original half cup or less that I had initially sent back. A totally unsatisfactory experience for the princely price of nearly $40.00. One serving of scones, a cup of Earl Grey and 3 mouthfuls of coffee.
There's now a lot of competition in hotels in this part of Canberra. As much as I love the old feel of this hotel, it is simply overpriced for what you get. The breakfast buffet was okay but there was no self serve coffee; you had to wait for the overworked barista to make you a coffee, which took 15 minutes. The coffee was also very bitter. The pods in the room are much better. The wifi was okay and I appreciated the separate bathtub. On the other hand, this hotel is far away from everything, so you will need a car to get around.
I spent 3 nights at Hyatt Canberra and their staff absolutely bring their A game in service, every one of them. All of them smiled and greeted me, even just walking by. Best service I've had at a hotel in years. It had been a long time between visits to the Hyatt Canberra and it was wonderful to see this heritage hotel so well maintained. The rooms are beautiful, food was excellent. My only feedback is that I couldnt see any soup on the room service menu and would have liked some, as i was somewhat unwell during my stay.
We had the opportunity to enjoy a family celebration in the Federation Hall. The building is beautiful and well maintained. It is one hundred years old as a building and the 1920's style is attractive and appealing l. The food served at the function was excellent. The service was friendly and helpful. The parking was plentiful and the signage within and without was good. All in all a great experience.
