It has been many years since I have been here. With their recent promotion of The Journey set meal, we decided it would be nice to revisit this place. Located within walking distance to Central, it is reasonably accessibly by bus, trains, light rail and metro. The restaurant is located on the first floor where diners can access via the stairs or a lift. Here is an account of my dining experience there and some tips: - This place is still popular and packed for a Friday night. I am glad that I booked in advance and I highly recommend booking. - There is a maître d' at the entrance greeting diners. - I really liked the decor, atmosphere and vibe for the restaurant. It has a warm welcome feel and it was very pleasant to dine here. - Staff were generally pretty good especially the guy who was on the dessert cart. We were just annoyed with a blasé response for one of the staff when we highlighted that the limited number of mussels on the dish had 2 mussels short as they were empty. - The journey menu had a pretty good spread featuring what Gavroche has been famouse for. Most of the dishes were pretty salty and the portion size of some of the dishes were quite tiny or inconsistent in sizing (e.g. scallops). The onion soup although nice was too cheesy that the cheese flavour overpowered the taste of the onion soup. Also, the portion size of the steak was very tiny and there were heaps load of fries. Furthermore, although the dessert cart was advertised as unlimited chef's selection of desserts, we felt misled as it was limited to choosing once for the variety of desserts on the trolley. Whilst we had a relatively pleasant dining experience, there were some disappointments.
Situated near Spice Alley, this is a little touch of France. We started off trying the Saint-Jacques Rossini, steak tartare, La Thon and French onion soup. For mains we tried Moreton Bag bugs, Sole Meunière and steak frites. Dessert was Creme brûlée and crepes. All the dishes were nice, but nothing really stood out and to compete in this space you really have to. The staff were friendly, the atmosphere relaxed. Prices are on the high side.
Gavroche is an absolute gem! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere transported us straight to Paris — warm lighting, elegant décor, and a buzzing yet intimate vibe. The service was outstanding: attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely welcoming without ever feeling rushed. The food was nothing short of exceptional. Every dish was beautifully presented and packed with authentic French flavours. The ingredients were fresh and high-quality, and the balance of richness and finesse in the cooking was spot on. Whether it was the classic mains, indulgent sides, or perfectly crafted desserts, everything felt carefully considered and executed with love. Pairing it all with their wine list made the evening even more special. Overall, Gavroche delivers the perfect blend of ambience, service, and incredible food. A true dining experience rather than just a meal. Highly recommended for anyone looking for an authentic French bistro experience in Sydney!
We recently had the journey menu and had a wonderful time. Service was great, they greeted us at the door quickly. We really enjoyed the mussels and most of the courses. We found the onion soup and steak frites a little bit too salty. My partners’ scallop tasted a bit off but mine was fine. It was fun to have the dessert cart pushed to us and I appreciate watching the server toast the sugar on the creme brûlée. It can get very loud inside when full but overall it was a great experience.
I just got back from there. We had bday lunch $59/p set. I literally felt sorry for the pricing that the food and service were that good for what we paid. Great vibe and food was delicious.
