Sasso Italiano is absolutely a great Italian restaurant by any objective standard. You can tell from the dishes that the kitchen puts in real effort and care, and the flavors are very authentic. The pizza base, in particular, was impressively fluffy — probably one of the best I’ve had in any Italian restaurant. The service was also outstanding. I was waiting alone for my friend for about half an hour, and even though I hadn’t ordered yet, every staff member was attentive and made me feel very welcome and looked after. The space itself is beautifully designed and really adds to the experience. All in all, it was a lovely visit and I will definitely be back.
Had a nice birthday dinner here with some friends. The place is really pretty for photos, albeit dimly lit at the back. The food was also delicious. I adored the proscuitto and gorgonzola pizza. I would say the portion sizes for the pasta were a little small, especially for the price. Service was slow but it seemed like a busy night. We had a good time :)
Tucked away in Woolloongabba, Sasso Italiano offers a relaxed dining experience. We recently visited using an EatClub promotion for 20% off, and while the food and drinks impressed, with generous shareable portions, there were a few service hiccups. The service was efficient, but lacked attentiveness at times, we had to ask for water and drinks. It wasn’t bad, just a little distant. For drinks, Sasso shines with its Negroni menu, featuring 12 different variations, plus a solid wine list with well-priced options. As for the food, we started with some focaccia and then the burrata, which was rich and creamy, paired with crispy fried capers and a crunchy bread crumble. It was delicious, though a bit too salty, and something fresh would’ve helped balance the flavours. The beef cheek pappardelle was the standout of the meal. Tender chunks of beef cheek in a rich, flavour packed sauce paired with perfectly cooked pasta. Hearty and satisfying, it was perfect for a cold night. For dessert, the pistachio panzerotti was unforgettable—crispy fried pastry filled with creamy pistachio cream and served with a scoop of pistachio gelato. It was a sweet, nutty finish that was absolutely to die for. Overall, Sasso Italiano delivers big on flavour with its wholesome pastas and pizzas. With more attentive service, it could be perfect, but it’s still a great choice for anyone craving Italian food done well
Some of the most excellent food I've had in Brisbane. If they still have the pistachio panzerotti when you visit, absolutely do not miss out. The pastry is perfectly crisp on the outside and soft within, the filling and the pistachio gelato are so excellently crafted, rich without being overwhelming, and the crumble with the gelato complimented the rest of the dish perfectly. The cannelloni was also a treat, so savoury and moreish you could eat helping after helping without becoming bored with the savoury, balanced, extremely well crafted deliciousness of it. The front of house staff were helpful, well-versed in the menu, and a complement to the excellence of the kitchen.
(I’ve attached two photos of the same dish, clearly showing the inconsistency between my first and second visits.) I visited this Italian restaurant twice, hoping it might become one of my favourites. On my first visit, I tried the alla gricia pasta (August special menu) and was really impressed – it was perfectly al dente, wonderfully creamy, and the guanciale was crisp and flavourful. Because of that great first experience, I went back and ordered the same dish. Unfortunately, it was completely different this time – the pasta was watery, the guanciale soggy, and the pasta itself not al dente. It almost felt like soup with pasta rather than a proper alla gricia. Honestly, it was one of the worst pastas I’ve had, especially disappointing at $38. Definitely not worth the price. For that price, consistency in both quality and taste is absolutely necessary, and this restaurant really fell short. I also tried the pizza, but it was far too salty. Even with anchovies, it should still be balanced and enjoyable, which this wasn’t.
