191 Grattan St, Carlton VIC 3053, Australia
Pub
•The iconic Prince Alfred Carlton has been a hub of Carlton life since 1926, and after a short closure and an impressive facelift, the 500-person space is back with an incredible rooftop bar and terrace as the cherry on top. No longer a rough and ready pub for students, the Prince Alfred Hotel has been rejuvenated with a quirky interior inspired by British Royalty combined with an array of floral and botanical elements. It’s elegant, fun and the place to go when you want to feel like royalty on a pauper’s budget. The menu features all of your favourite pub classics, plus the added bonus of a rotating container kitchen featuring tasty treats from the likes of Mr Burger, Belles Hot Chicken and more.
The chicken schnitzel itself was amazing. Sadly the gravy with it was watery and didnt have much taste while the fries where lukewarm when they arrived, that didnt feel fresh at all. Portion sizes of the starters left much to be desired as well. Of course theyre not a main dish, but compared to any other starter ive had here so far these were just too small for that price. The atmosphere and service is very good and there are no complaints!
Had a few beers here and it got fairly busy with the after work / uni crowd. $10 pints during happy hour is good but then needed a bite and ordered the poutine at $15 for a small tray. It’s like the chips had been fried a lot earlier and it had been thrown in the oven or under a heat lamp to warm them up prior to serving. Watery gravy didn’t help although there were a couple of clumps of curd for aesthetics. Would have a drink here again but wouldn’t get any food.
lots of parking available around and near the pub. we came here for the steak. Located just metres from The University of Melbourne, Prince Alfred Rooftop and Bar is a lively, bustling community pub. Serving lunch and dinner, it is a hub of Carlton and campus life. They have a range of cocktails, tap and bottled beers, and wines - red, white, rose, sparkling wines by the glass, as well as natural wine. Food-wise, they serve classic pub food like burgers and parma as well as a good range of vegetarian options. Great place for students, happy hour deals are good.
The parma was very good. Although at $27.50 I would expect Aioli to be free, and extra $2 is too much and I actually spent less because I couldn't justify getting a beer as well. It's not a $12 burger and chips
They were out of steak and chicken wings, but I’m pretty sure they had a busy day. Despite this, the waiter was a lovely guy, and apologised despite me insisting it was fine. Music could’ve been louder to add some more atmosphere. My halloumi was lovely, as well as my martini.
