•Colonial Hotel Melbourne has a few personalities, and that much is immediately clear. Within its very old (yet recently renovated) walls, there's a public bar, restaurant, a slew of function venues, and even a band room/nightclub. It goes without saying then, that the Colonial Hotel is conducive to celebration times spent in the party zone. Upon entering, the space one sees is the public bar and restaurant. It's the kind of place you're just as likely to see be-suited types loosening their ties after work as you are to see young upstarts getting ready for a night hitting a club or two.
There are four private rooms on offer as function venues, all different sizes and shapes, and all conducive to slightly different types of occasions. Fun fact: one of them is licensed for all twenty-four hours of the day. In addition to those, there's Brown Alley, the upstairs band room and club, a fixture in Melbourne's nightlife scene. Of course, a building built in 1854 is an interesting location for a clubbing hotspot, but that's part of what gives the Colonial Hotel its enduring charm. The Colonial Hotel sits on King Street, on the bottom end of Melbourne's CBD. It's right near Spencer Street, so Southern Cross Station is the closest train option. Trams run along Spencer, as well as neighbouring Bourke Street.
Not my first time here and it won't be the last visit. Had a Porterhouse steak cooked to perfection. It was so tasty. Others in my group had the same and a few had the chicken Parmigiana. We all agreed the food was delicious and very well priced. The atmosphere was relaxing and welcoming. Thanks from us all to the owner and staff.
We went to the Colonial on a Thursday and ordered the Porterhouse with chips special for $20 AUD each. The portions are generous and the steak is deliciously seasoned and cooked to perfection. Would absolutely recommend coming here for a bite to eat and a drink.
I wanted to keep this place my secret, but I really want to leave a review. These guys do steak - really GOOD steak, and in these crazy days it is CHEAP, on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday lunch and dinner: $20 for porterhouse, $25 for ribeye, $30 for scotch fillet. I am personally in love with the scotch fillet. I’m not a good photographer, but rib eye steak (pictured) was perfectly medium rare, juicy, blissfully tasty, and there was SO much meat, with excellent chips and beautifully dressed salad: all for $25! I have paid more than twice that for less quantity and lower quality at “fancier” places. Also, the other meals have been beautiful too on other occasions: my partner had the colonial seafood plate and I had the pork belly on an earlier occasion, and both were truly excellent. This place has apparently changed ownership recently, and the staff are attentive, friendly and welcoming. I can only talk about the soda, lime and bitters (I don’t drink alcohol), and that was one of the best I’ve had. I would come here every night if I could. Come and try it - especially the steak!
Visiting from QLD. The service was friendly and second to none. The steaks were cooked to perfection and the presentation was excellent. I will happily come back to eat here on the next visit to Melbourne.
Amazing, extremely friendly service. Food was excellent quality. Amazing prices for the steak specials - and they were cooked to order. Kids absolutely smashed the bowl of chips & garlic cheese pizza and garlic bread. Tiniest one had the waffles, which she absolutely loved.
