•ABOUT: THE DUNKIRK HOTEL PYRMONT
Built in 1879 and steeped in tradition, the iconic Dunkirk Hotel in Sydney truly has been Pyrmont’s local for almost 150 years. Formerly the Butcher’s Arms Hotel, it was renamed in the 1940s to commemorate The Battle of Dunkirk.
The Dunkirk Hotel underwent its first renovation in over 17 years in 2020/2021 - including the Main Bar, Terrace Bar, The Loft, new TAB Room, as well as a new Lounge now located at the front of the hotel on Harris Street. In July 2021, we launched our brand new boutique hotel accommodation - now two floors and 12 rooms of beautifully refurbished king, queen, family, double single, and single options with both ensuite and shared bathroom options. The hotel's bottleshop has had an upgrade and now stocks an extensive range of beer, spirits, wine, sparkling, and champagne. More recently, the hotel's facade had a complete 1930's restoration, re-establishing the Dunkirk as the proud heritage-listed institution it once was.
The Dunkirk specialises in Functions and Events, from the smallest get together to a large celebration. We have 2 private function spaces to suite all needs. One of Pyrmont's liveliest pubs, there is always something on at the Dunkirk. Whether it be live music, trivia, karaoke, members draw or a bottomless brunch. There is something for everyone at the Dunkirk.
Come and see for yourself why the Dunkirk Hotel truly is Pyrmont’s local.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND PRIVATE FUNCTIONS HERE. We had 2 separate milestone birthday celebrations here at the Dunkirk this year (towards the end of 2025) 21st & 50th Birthday party. Matt & his team went above & beyond in helping us with whatever we needed on both nights to make it a smooth event. They were very accommodating with the stuff we needed such as setting up a DJ area, Lolly tables, Catering options & allowed us to drop off cakes & decorations earlier on the day for both events & was very flexible in providing access prior to the party to decorate the rooms. Matt was easy to communicate with in coordinating both events as he was very prompt with his replies. Both rooms (The Loft & The Terrace Room) are perfect for private functions with its own bar in each of the rooms. The Loft room – 2 small separate balcony areas for smokers & bathroom access is downstairs in the main bar area. The Terrace Room – Large outdoor terrace area for smokers & has its own private bathroom facility on the same level The Terrace room is beautiful and looked recently renovated. The catering on both nights were great too! The food was very good – Especially the Pork Belly Baos, Beef Burger sliders, Arancini Balls & Salt & Pepper Squid. Everything we ordered was tasty, There is accommodation upstairs also & may be worth checking out if you hire the venue for a party. It all looks well renovated & modern. I can’t say enough about Matt & his team. If you are thinking of having a private function close enough to the CBD, THIS IS THE PLACE TO BE. Easy public transport access with Light Rail at Fish Markets or Pyrmont Bay & buses on Harris Street. We would definitely return here for another function if we have one. Thanks again Matt! Rob.
Don’t waste your time. They don’t care. Your response was not honest — just a weak, predictable PR deflection. I work in town planning, and the fact you didn’t apply for extended NYE trading hours says one of two things: either gross mismanagement or total incompetence. Neither is acceptable. Don’t insult customers by pretending otherwise. I’ve spent multiple New Year’s Eves in pubs across Sydney. Every single one managed to stay open. So explain why you didn’t — because the excuses don’t hold up. What made it worse was the bar staff. The attitude was appalling: rude, dismissive, and openly unpleasant. And before you try to spin that too — I didn’t say a word to them. Not one complaint, not one confrontation. That behaviour was unprovoked. Closing a pub half an hour before midnight on New Year’s Eve is embarrassing. For tourists, it’s shocking. For locals, it’s laughable. A pub that can’t even provide a drink to see in the New Year has completely missed the point of being a pub. I won’t be back — not for New Year’s, not for birthdays, not for any celebration. I’m unlikely to return casually either. I will also be sharing this experience widely, because people deserve to know what they’re walking into. You didn’t just lose one customer — you lost dozens. I review venues regularly, and I absolutely stand by this: avoid this place. So un-Australian, and a complete joke given the name.
Location is fabulous. Walk to Fish Market in 10 minutes. Plenty of convenience stores and even a couple of organic supermarkets within 5 minutes walk. Light Rail is also nearby, and I took the metro all the way from the airport. My room was comfy and very clean. Some traffic noise but that disappears if you run the in-room aircon unit. The shared bathrooms were fine too. My room was well equipped with a good fridge and a kettle - so I didn't need to dine outside, preferring the food from the organic store. Great experience - infinitely preferable to a soulless concrete shoebox hotel.
Went here 2 weeks ago on a Friday with my partner and a friend, and must say I was very impressed. The staff were very friendly (and unlike alot of pubs in the city) actually knew how to pour a beer properly. They had a good variety of beers on tap and everyone seemed to have a good time when karaoke was on. They have a promo for oysters on Friday, which are simple, but fresh from the fish market and well worth a try. I personally had the rump steak cooked bleu (one of the rare places that can do it properly), while my partner had the chicken burger cooked to perfection. All 3 of us ordered the tacos as well, which even in their native place of origin the people would be proud of. Hats off to the staff and management for one of the best nights I've had out in a long time.
Was here last Wednesday during trivia night. Was an absolute blast of fun, the trivia host was full of life, the staff seemed to really get into it as well. The cocktail menu was much better than I expected from a small pub and tasted pretty damned good as well. The manager Marta had that special flair you'd expect from a girl from the continent and extremely friendly, though also professional. Both her and the staff made us feel like locals even though we weren't. Thanks guys, will recommend you to all my friends and family...keep doing a great job
