Stayed at Copthorne Paihia for 3 nights over Christmas. Check-in was extremely disappointing. We arrived early and were told our room hadn’t been cleaned yet and that we would be messaged once it was ready. At official check-in time, we hadn’t heard anything, so we queued again only to be told the room was still not ready. No solutions or alternatives were offered—just told to wait another 10–15 minutes. After waiting again with no communication, we lined up a third time and were finally told the room was ready. When we raised concerns about the lack of communication, staff dismissed it and blamed being busy with check-ins, which felt unprofessional and dismissive. The room itself was nice and the bed was comfortable. The pool was okay, nothing outstanding, and could definitely use better cleaning as there were a lot of leaves and debris. The hot spa pool was a highlight. There were not enough poolside umbrellas or chairs for the number of guests, and parking was very limited. Finding a park felt like the Hunger Games. To add insult to injury, checkout was equally terrible. After checking out, we were informed that there were room service charges on our room that we did not make. Staff checked the signature from the room service slip and confirmed it did not match our signature. When we asked how this could have happened, no proper explanation was given, only that they had new staff and it was busy. Not reassuring at all. The only consistently positive part of our stay was the kitchen staff. They were excellent, and the breakfast buffet was good. Overall, the poor check-in and checkout experiences, combined with the lack of communication and accountability, completely overshadowed the stay. We won’t be coming back and do not recommend this hotel.
Very flexible staff. Due to a flight cancellation, we initially had to leave one day earlier, and the hotel kindly arranged to cancel our last night free of charge. However, after another last-minute change by the airline, our flight was moved two days later instead, so we needed to extend our stay again. This was also no problem. Although we had to change rooms because our original room category was fully booked, the team prioritized cleaning the new room so we could switch rooms seamlessly at the same time as check-out and check-in. Well done! Refurbished rooms are great. Very nice outdoor pool area.
Garden view room: v v comfy bed, specious, clean and quite. Would have loved some cold water in the fridge - otherwise, great room. Jimmy Cooks restaurant: a la carte - fabulous food. Tentative, friendly staff. Please leave a tip for them :) SOS Spa: divine divine divine. Book ahead! 1000% coming back to the Copthorne.
Cons: This place is an entomologists dream. Soooooo many insects, likely due to the fact they leave all the doors to the hallways open to the outside and the room doors don't seal to the bottom, leaving plenty of space for crickets, spiders, flies and mosquito eaters to join you in your stay. They have a towel-card rule where you trade your card for a pool towel, then bring the towel back to get your card back, leaving you in the awkward position of standing in the lobby in your wet swimsuit, which is pretty uncomfortable and for the cost of rooms here, a bit odd to treat your guests like children. Any hotel or resort I have I've been to before just have the towels freely available at the pool and its an honor system where you leave the towels in a basket at the pool or your room (after you have dried and showered). I can't imagine towel-theft is that much of an issue that it would warrant a multi step system involving cards, but hey, I'm not running the place. Pros: the woman who checked us in, I think her name was Anjani, was so sweet and friendly and professional. She deserves all the accolades. What a wonderful and bright person to have greeting you on your stay. Room was clean (aside from live and dead insects, but I wont blame housekeeping for that). Breakfast had decent options. Overall, the room was fine (if you don't mind sharing with a bunch of insects) but nothing extraordinarily stood out to me for this stay.
Great place to stay as our “headquarters” visiting Bay of Islands. Great location at oceanfront, clean but older showing some wear and tear. Housekeeping a little too relaxed with daily cleaning. Restaurant had a great buffet breakfast but dinner as borderline. I had the veal rack and ordered it medium rare, the meat seemed to have been “precooked” and dry and simply put in the fryer… meat was overcooked and dry -I guess it would be better to stick with burgers and fries!
