Reviews for Rydges Esplanade Resort Cairns

Yes, Rydges is a bit dated compared to some of the newer hotels in Cairns, but it was priced accordingly and we saved $100's staying here. It allowed us to spend more on food and activities in Cairns instead. We thought it was a great value, clean hotel with good location and room size. Staff service was exceptional. My son loved that the bar staff remembered his favourite soft drink flavour, reception staff always had a smile and even the chef greeted us hello when we randomly passed him in a hallway one day. Breakfast buffet was very good and although we only ate once at the restaurant, the pizza we ordered was yummy. It was about a 15 minute walk to and from the Cairns lagoon but our young primary school kids found this easy to do thanks to the walk being broken up with various playgrounds and splash zones along the way. I would recommend Rydges if you are budget concious but still wanting all the features of a 4 star hotel within close proximity of Cairns CBD.

The hotel is showing its age especially externally. The rusting balustrades should be replaced with glass to reveal the stunning views. The bar and restaurant are poorly furnished and there is no tropical charm. The pool landscaping is like a moonscape probably because of the chlorine. Nothing attractive about it. Staff are wonderful and try their hardest but the odds are against them.

Sorry, but this is just not a 4 star hotel in terms of what you imagine a 4 star hotel to be. Everything is quite shabby and very dated to the point where even I couldn’t look past it. We didn’t want to go bare feet on the room carpet. The reception is underwhelming and the breakfast wasn’t worth the cost. Someone else said the fitness room was a joke, and lol, it was. The back entry to the hotel from the street seems to have been totally forgotten about. Our balcony had what used to be a planter area just underneath it but maintenance was abandoned long since and it was just an area where lost underwear and brushes etc were collecting in dead grass. We didn’t mind our stay because we didn’t pay much for it, the sheets were clean, the shower was powerful and it felt safe, but whatever boxes were ticked for it to get 4 stars obviously weren’t based around them updating, maintaining or deep cleaning anything. This review isn’t actually intended to be mean, it’s purely to let people know that when they don’t pay much, it’s not actually a bargain in this instance. You’re just getting what you paid for. Giving it 2 stars feels a bit mean, but I really don’t think I can do 3. Please maintain it a bit better if your going to advertise as 4 stars. The staff were nice.

Pauline on Reception was very helpful and was always very courteous and polite. She kindly highlighted various places we wished to visit on the lical map, with walking times to reach them, which was very helpful to us. However, on our last morning, when I complained to Reception about the level of noise from our next door room (which had happened twice during the early hours of the morning) to Brad, he became defensive and told me that I should have reported it, at the time. We just wanted to go back to sleep!! (We had a room where it was possible to use it as an interconnecting room but they had failed to make sure it sealed out the noise from that room, at all!) He was also most unsympathetic to issues I was having trying to use my UK phone to confirm our local taxi transfer to the airport later that day ... he was very unprofessional. Later, Pauline just rang for us and confirmed our booking, which was exactly what I would have expected from your hotel - thank you, Pauline! You have a nice view of the garden and pools from the restaurant windows. Staff there were helpful, but due to it's layout, it lacked any real atmosphere, whatsoever and in some ways it felt more like a UK service station food outlet than a restaurant. Much to our surprise and delight we found the fresh soups and thin crust sourdough pizzas were both delicious, on both days! Breakfast was buffet style with a good choice of items and the menu seemed to change daily. It was possible to request a key to lock away your passports, etc, inside the room, which was helpful to us. Thank you.

Rydges Esplanade Resort is ideally located. Ms. Resa and her team ensured that we had breakfast and lunch of a good standard for the entire week. Anne graciously ensured that I had a complimentary delicious slice of cake to celebrate my birthday. Reception staff were all kind and helpful, including Brad at checkout. The dinner menu had some interesting items, and we enjoyed all that we sampled. The functions and events team also deserves special mention for skilfully managing multiple functions without leaving us unhappy.
