Reviews for Shangri-La Hotel, The Marina Cairns

We had a wonderful stay here. I read the reviews thoroughly before we came and , perhaps we were lucky but did not encounter the problems encountered. Ok, except for the pool barman who's manner was so lacking in any friendliness it was almost laughable. 1. Dirty carpets were mentioned...well they were being professionally cleaned while we there. 2. Bathrooms also got complaints.. ours was lovely and probably revamped in the past 3 years 3. Apart from the pool barman the service was friendly and welcoming . Doorman , from England, when we arrived was really good as was our check in. Yes, there are some mould stains high up on the building which we saw on other hotels.... probably due to the climate. Location was fantastic and all 5 local restaurants we went to, along the waterfront, were very good. Tamarind at the Casino was tops though. We would definitely stay here again...and again with water views. Ours overlooked sea and the town and gave us magic sunsets

My partner and I had such a wonderful stay and will definitely be coming back! Also a massive shout out to Alessio who was thoughtful enough to explain the best restaurants, places to visit and ways on how we could book ferries to visit other islands. Thank you for such a wonderful stay!

On arrival to the Shanghai La Cairns we were greeted by a porter from England who was so welcoming on our arrival. My check in experience was excellent, as to my departure experience. Overall my stay was a good experience but I think there needs to be more improvement in some areas: The barman at the poolside bar was not at all good with making cocktails and mocktails, was not welcoming given the impression I was an inconvenience. As a result from this experience we chose not to have drinks or food by the pool again. Location was fantastic. Our room overlooked the Marina and gave us beautiful sunsets and sunrises.

Check in was easy and the staff were extremely friendly, helpful and welcoming. We stayed in a suite and the room itself was quite spectacular. Amazing view of the harbour/wharf from the room we stayed in with a huge private balcony. Our Horizon Suite was quiet and very private, having its own elevator for just a handful of rooms on 2 floors of your tower felt very exclusive. It was a fantastic private room for a couple with no evidence of anyone else staying there as it was so quiet. The availability of the Horizon Club lounge was very convenient, if a little like an entry level airport lounge. It was quiet and a good use of space that would otherwise be a board room or meeting facility. It felt good to have an exclusive lounge to go to away from others. Lots of the fittings needed a touch up (or just replacing). There was missing paint in a lot of places and the handles of the chests of drawers did not befit a 5* hotel and a $500+ a night rate. Easy fixes by just updating the movable furniture and tidying up some of the damage could make this an easy 5 star review. The pool seemed quite cluttered, closed in and small for such a large hotel, but we didn't need to use it anyway. The location of this was perfect for access to the various eateries. If you had planned an early trip out to the reef, the terminal is right at your doorstep so it's an ideal location for reef trippers. The Wharf and Esplanade is easily in walking distance as is Fogarty Park and the Cairns Lagoon. Overall a beautiful hotel with fantastic opportunities to be a truly memorable occasion, fantastic location with amazing spaces let down by a little maintenance. There are better options for the money currently, but a little maintenance and this would be right on top of the list again. I hope next time we stay, it's been fixed up, it really doesn't seem like it would take much to realise its potential.

I had booked a cot for our room, rang the morning the day of arrival to confirm we would have a cot set up on arrival as we were arriving later in the evening. At check in was told the cot was already set up. Get to the room at 11pm and no cot to be seen. half an hour later cot turns up with no sheets or pillows. Poor service and probably the worst 5 star hotel I’ve stayed in.
