Reviews for State Library Victoria

The library is beautiful, it's definitely a must see when walking around Melbourne. The dome is one of the main attractions and doesn't disappoint. Obviously it's still a real library so please be respectful as you walk around. There is a museum section as well and just a real pleasure to see.

Wow! What a magnificent place! I cannot recommend a visit too highly, even if you have little interest in books (which I appreciate is very unlikely) The scale of the beautiful building is incredible and the contents truly astounding. One of the highlights of our visit to the city.

A very beautiful library, and definitely a must-visit when you’re in Melbourne. There were quite a lot of tourists around, but it was still worth it. When I visited, there were also two free exhibits, which made the experience even better.

📚 State Library Victoria – A Timeless Colonial Masterpiece 🏛️✨ Located in the heart of Melbourne, State Library Victoria is not only Australia’s oldest public library but also one of its most beautifully designed heritage landmarks. Built in 1854, the library’s stunning colonial architecture reflects the elegance and grandeur of the old era, making it a true treasure for history lovers, book enthusiasts, and architecture admirers alike. Step inside and you’ll be greeted by the iconic La Trobe Reading Room — a breathtaking space with its majestic dome ceiling, grand columns, and classic white interior that floods the room with natural light. The combination of intricate design, antique wooden desks, and towering bookshelves creates an atmosphere that feels both peaceful and inspiring, transporting you back to Melbourne’s colonial past. 📖🌿 Beyond its architecture, the library houses extensive collections, fascinating exhibitions, and cozy spaces for studying, reading, and reflection. Whether you come for the books, history, or beauty, State Library Victoria offers a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in a timeless piece of Melbourne’s heritage.

When I visited Melbourne, I came to the library 📖 with some friends. It’s very spacious and functions as a tourist attraction, but there were also many people actually using it as a library 📚 The square you often see in photos appears as you walk further in from the entrance. Since it’s such a large-scale library, I definitely recommend visiting if you’re in Melbourne! It’s free to enter, so it’s also a great spot for those who just want to take a few photos📷
