•The Royal Albert Hotel has been part of the Surry Hills landscape since 1927.
In the beginning, the rich naval officers were granted the land of the area for grazing, as Sydney’s need to feed itself expanded. The land was less than perfect for agricultural purposes, but with the growing demand for food it was here that a fledgling livestock industry sprang up.
As Sydney grew out, the suburb began to take shape, with wealthy landowners subdividing the area to provide affordable housing for the working classes and their families.
Much of this history is embedded in the bricks of the Royal Albert and, if the walls could talk, they’d tell the stories of those who shaped Surry Hills.
Several decades ago, the hotel become known to its regulars as ‘The Jam Tin’. This was due to the fact that the patrons’ bar tabs – often amounting to significant sums of money – were held in an iconic jam tin behind the bar.
More recently, Surry Hills has become home to a cosmopolitan blend of people from all walks of life. With food, beverages and an atmosphere that celebrates this diversity, we welcome you to relax, create your own stories, and help shape the future of our suburb.

Came for dinner. Started with $1 wings. The smoked chicken sounded like a great option, one had half a chicken with generous sides, I had the chicken roll, the chicken was tender and the gravy was delicious as were the chips, but thought it was a bit pricey for $25 though. One friend ordered a steak with an extra side of brocollini, he was disappointed that he got 4 strands for $8.50. Others also ordered steak which they wanted medium rare, but the steaks were thin that they were medium to well done. The staff are friendly, it was a busy night and it wasn't a long wait for the food. The best part is that it's dog friendly.
Highly recommended. Great value food and revised food menu. We had the Thursday special - 300g Porterhouse steak for $26. High quality, big, thick steak pieces with little to no gristle (unlike other nearby pubs). Big serve of fries and small salad. Dog friendly too! We are locals and will definitely be back again to sample all the daily special! The pub is also famous for its craft beers! The venue is clean, renovated and bright. A pleasant change from the typical smelly beer-stained pub carpets. Kudos to the new owners!
Pretty good pub food, maybe a little on the pricier side for this wedge salad ($25). Burgers orders by my friends looked good, although apparently one of the steaks was overdone when asked to be medium rare.
I recently had a fantastic lunch at the Royal Albert Hotel in Surry Hills with four of my co-workers. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, making our experience even more enjoyable. I ordered the steak pie, and it was absolutely delicious—rich, hearty, and packed with flavor. Everyone at the table enjoyed their meals, and the bistro food really stood out. The selection of local craft beers was impressive, providing great options to pair with our lunch. Overall, the Royal Albert Hotel is a hidden gem in Surry Hills, perfect for a casual lunch with friends or colleagues. Highly recommend it for anyone looking for great food and a welcoming vibe!
Trivia 10 out of 10. Best trivia ever. Tom is such a good host. Half smoked chook with fries is the best meal of all time. The pool table is excellent and much fun has been had
