I recently hired the full Level 1 at Hawthorn Hotel for my 40th birthday, and I genuinely cannot fault a single thing about the experience. From the very beginning, Eve was an absolute standout. Her communication and attention to detail in the lead-up to the event made what could have been a stressful planning process feel genuinely enjoyable. She understood the vision, answered every question promptly, and made sure everything was in place before the night even began. That kind of care from an event perspective makes all the difference. On the night itself, the entire staff team were warm, professional, and attentive. Having the full level meant guests could move freely between areas, and the flow of the event felt completely natural — people mingled, the spaces were used brilliantly, and the energy built throughout the night exactly as you’d hope for a big celebration. And the food — honestly, it deserves its own mention. Guests were raving about it all night. The gnocchi and calamari in particular were absolute highlights — I had multiple people come up to me mid-event just to tell me how good they were. For party food to generate that kind of reaction is really something. It elevated the whole night and made it feel like a proper celebration rather than just standard event catering. It’s clear the team here genuinely take pride in what they do. Every little detail was handled, and I was able to actually be present at my own party rather than managing logistics — which is the best gift a venue can give you. We also came a little earlier before event to decorate and setup space and it all came together! If you’re looking for somewhere to host a milestone event in Melbourne, look no further. Hawthorn Hotel delivered on every front. Thank you to Eve and the whole team for making my 40th one I’ll remember for a very long time. 🥂
We were recommended to come to the Hawthorn Hotel the week before after my partner had a delicious steak and garlic bread. He was told to come back for the roast as it was “gastronomic” and although it was pricey, was worth it. So we arrived for Mother’s Day really looking forward to trying it. Unfortunately, the experience was really disappointing. The lamb roast was very fatty, chewy, cut too thickly and somehow still dry. The beef roast was inedible — extremely overcooked, tough, and honestly tasted as though it had been reheated in a microwave. The roast potatoes were also dry and had a similar texture. I genuinely could not finish the beef roast because I couldn’t properly cut through the meat. The pumpkin was delicious, as were the beans, which were really the saving grace of the meal as they gave me something enjoyable to eat. The Yorkshire pudding being used as a bowl was unfortunately soggy and tasted as though it had been sitting for most of the day. The children’s meals were also disappointing. Their chips came out cold, and my daughter’s sliders were lacking sauce which made them quite dry. Service also lacking throughout the evening. We were never offered or brought water to the table, and once we were seated we were largely left alone. I’m really hoping this was just a one-off experience, especially given how highly the venue had been recommended to us initially. I completely understand that being later in the day on Mother’s Day may have affected freshness, however in my opinion the meals should not have been served in that condition. It honestly felt past the point of being suitable to send out to guests.
Our son celebrated his 21st birthday with 50 people at Hawthorn Hotel Functions - at the Ethel Room Lounge and Deck. Eve Cook did a fantastic job as Events Mgr! Her bubbly and accomodating personality matched our own excitement at our once a lifetime event for our son. She organised flowers and lights decorations for the tables making the occasion memorable. The raw brick walled rooms and the outside deck with lights was warm and inviting. The 8 Canapés Cocktail Package with bar tab was perfect. The food was excellent and plentiful opening with trays of raw oysters followed by Harissa lamb skewers. Over all, it was a job well done thanks to Eve and the team at Hawthorn Hotel for making our occasion special and memorable. We highly recommend them!
