Why you'll love Buxton Contemporary

  • Unique Venue that allows event to be held withing an exhibition/ gallery space with artworks and projections that optionally can be included in the event.
  • Is largely a blank canvas with a large floorspace and capability to project client content withing our gallery space.
  • Experience a modern and contemporary ambiance that sets the stage for an unforgettable event.

Buxton Contemporary was initiated in 2014 with a landmark act of philanthropy through the Michael and Janet Buxton Foundation. Along with donating their significant collection of contemporary Australian art to the University of Melbourne, the Buxtons provided funds to build this public art gallery on the University’s Victorian College of the Arts Southbank campus.

Opening its doors in 2018, Buxton Contemporary continues the ethos of Michael and Janet Buxton’s approach to collecting: supporting contemporary artists and a sustained engagement with the development of artistic practice.

Buxton Contemporary’s dynamic program of solo and thematic exhibitions, artist commissions, publishing, and learning initiatives connects contemporary art to new audiences. It demonstrates the transformative potential of creative thinking and art-led exchanges of ideas in an educational context.

I had a really good time in this gallery, the exhibition reminded me to me and my earlier drawings when I was studying Architecture. Also very dynamic and collaborative.

Located inside the Southbank campus of the University of Melbourne, Buxton Contemporary is a hidden gem to explore. It occupies two floors, has a very spacious lift and a small gift store. The staff here are friendly and efficient.

Loved my visit. Beautifully presented gallery and spacious gallery spaces. Perfect location, around the corner from the National Gallery of Victoria, Arts Centre Melbourne and next to southbank theatre. Right in the Arts Precinct, cafes and Gardens. Being there to critique an exhibition I had questions. The staff were very helpful and happy to answer any questions making you feel welcome. Well set up and present exhibition. Using traditional and contemporary display techniques. If you have an opportunity to visit Buxton Contemporary In my opinion you will not be disappointed and enjoy your visit. Stay frosty everyone. 😎🌻

Love to see the re-use of the old buildings, ensuring our local history will remain looked after for future generations. Got to view the exhibition, some interesting installations around music as a language. Some of the artworks were a bit lost on me, I only got an enter score of 70 at high school, and I don't wear square glasses - but I was able to enjoy it on my own level nonetheless 👏👏
