82-84 Darling St, Balmain East NSW 2041, Australia
Pub
•Affectionately nicknamed ‘The EVH’ by our locals, we are proudly ‘pokie free’, dog friendly, and the only remaining hotel in East Balmain. Super conveniently located, only 100m from the East Balmain Ferry (or 2 minute's walk), we are also only one ferry ride from Barangaroo!
Originally constructed as the Commercial Hotel in 1875 by Mr Frederick Leach we were one of eight pubs originally servicing the East Balmain peninsula. Beginning life as a pub, greengrocer, and bakery, The EVH survived the tough times for pubs from the 1890’s to 1920’s when many pubs in the Inner West closed due to reduced trading hours and stringent licensing requirements. In the 1930’s, Toohey’s took over the lease and ultimately freehold of The Commercial Hotel. And after over 130 years trading as The Commercial Hotel our pub was reopened briefly as The Belgian Beer Cafe in 2008.
In 2011 the venue was renovated and renamed The East Village Hotel and we continue to proudly honour our historically significant past and just like Mr Leach and all the publicans after him we work hard on the daily to ‘Do Local Great’.

Great vibe and nice foods. Tried the mulled wine and liked it very much.
We celebrated my dad's birthday here recently, and booked food options. Unfortunately we were entirely misled in terms of food offerings. We elected to have 40 "portions" of individual fish and chips, which is meant to be a substantial enough serving after canapés. These fish and chips were essentially a single fish finger with 4 shoestring fries. We also elected to have a canapé platter with "mini sausage rolls", however these were the tiniest rolls on the planet and not what anyone would consider a mini sausage roll. Overall, the food was underwhelming in terms of both size and taste. Our guests were left hungry and underwhelmed. When deciding on the food, we were given some suggestions on how to select items and we opted for food/platters that would adequately feed ours guests without the food being overly heavy or like a 4 course meal. Grazing platter was as expected though, and delicious, so no complaint there. Service was good and no complaints there, this review is simply about the food offered and not as described. Very disappointing that we provided this feedback as well, and were just told that the feedback would be passed on. I would not recommend as a venue to host a party.
Calamari was absolutely gorgeous and my partners fish and chips where great! They accommodated for my gf (coeliac) which was fantastic, however, the bread was average. Atmosphere what 100% and the staff where absolutely brilliant! Every though it was New Years they were attentive and helpful. I do appreciate the staff and how they worked around my allergy!
Busy local pubs usually make great, simple meals. That's not our experience here. Love the place, and happy to pay $55 for a schooner, soda water, salad and side of Cole slaw...but not these ones. (Btw the white bay beer is sublime). The system is that the food is made, a bell rung and someone comes to grab it and ferry it to you. After watching our meal sitting as several kitchen team walked past it, looked at it and...nuthin, we went to grab it ourselves before the chef kindly obliged. The nicoise salad was sans pommes de terres, that is, no spuds. The beans were 4 whole beans buried under the pack of mixed leaves and halved cherry tomatoes of the lowest quality imaginable. A nicely poached egg, olives, and mediocre anchovies. If youre going to use fresh tuna, atvleaste sear the outer, tataki style to give us some interest (though the traditional tin tuna really works better (though originally, there's no tuna, but I digress). Incomplete, especially spudless but a pass, 2.5/5. Sadly, the slaw was a disaster. I'm old, I'm really old, but in human years, that cabbage made me look like kid. As cabbage ages, it loses its ability to snap when easten, even when dressed. Think of it like shaving with a dull razor. That's what eating that cabbage was like. We will come back when we pass by again...you never know, the $50 500g beef ribs (expect max 150g of meat) may be the way to go.
Had some friends in town today so thought I'd show them my local and what a traditional Sunday roast could be. As usual the service from the floor staff in the restaurant was great. Everything, drinks and food came out on time, however some of the dishes certainly missed the mark. The two lamb dishes were ordinary. It felt like the lamb had been cooked, sliced and then reheated in a pan. The kids chicken schnitzel is certainly not good value. A 1/4 of an adults serve for $15 (adults $26) warranted us ordering another serving for a 12-year old. The snapper was a green curry in colour only. Absolutely no spice to it. Considering the many options available in Balmain these days I would expected a lot more consdering the calibre of staff in the kitchen.
