•About the venue
The Golden Gate Hotel's been a part of the South Melbourne landscape since way back in 1853. That's a long, long time – and certainly enough time to perfect the art of being a relaxed and friendly traditional pub, and then combine it with a contemporary dining experience. The Golden Gate Hotel is an iconic pub that offers a contemporary dining experience with the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of a traditional pub as well as live music. The Golden Gate Hotel features a number of exclusive and non-exclusive spaces, making it a good pick for a variety of event types. Birthdays, cocktail parties, corporate events, and even relaxed post-work celebrations and casual drink gatherings.

Just randomly walked in for lunch for the first time and was happy to find they had a lunch special going on, which was a bonus. We ordered the chicken schnitzel, which came with chips, gravy, and salad. The meat was very chewy. The chicken burger was actually delicious, but the chips looked sad and unappealing. Service was good, but the food took over 20 minutes to arrive, even though it wasn’t busy at all. Overall, an okay experience—some hits and misses.
Went to Golden Gate Hotel for a work dinner on the 29th of April with colleagues. I ordered the Mexican-style chicken parma, while others at the table tried different varieties. Unfortunately, all of the parmas were quite bland and lacking flavour, and the chicken itself was fairly tough. The nacho chips also didn’t seem fresh, and overall the dishes lacked proper seasoning, which made the meals pretty underwhelming. On the positive side, the service was very good and the atmosphere was decent for a Wednesday night. Staff were friendly and the venue had a nice vibe, but unfortunately the food quality just didn’t match the overall experience.
Honestly, pretty disappointing overall. There are more stars in this review than there are potatoes on the plate… which says a lot for a roast. The presentation is genuinely horrific, everything just looks thrown together with no real care or attention. It doesn’t exactly scream “Sunday roast done right.” But the biggest issue was the bottomless wine situation. We rang up beforehand and were told it was on, so all five of us turned up expecting it. Then suddenly, we’re told it’s not running? That’s just not on. If you say something is available, you need to honour it. We came in expecting a great experience and left pretty underwhelmed. Sort it out.
A solid, dependable pub overall. The parma is good value if you catch it during the lunch specials, though the regular prices, especially for drinks, feel a bit steep. The chips are thin and quite a few end up overdone and not really edible. What really lets it down is the pricing on extras, $4 for a small gravy feels excessive and a bit of a slap in the face (see image for size!).
Excellent atmosphere service and food. Highly recommend. Perfect on a sunny day on the roof top and with lots of sky lights
