This building was the OG hotel when Canberra city was first being established. There was a small book detailing the origins of the hotel in our room with interesting historical photos. Put my mind at ease as I first thought it was a repurposed hospital! Beautiful courtyard in the centre of the buildings. Plenty of secure car parking at the back of the building that can only be accessed with a code given to you when you check in, but it is pay per night, not free. Only downside was wifi was not great, the internet was faster just using our own data, which was fine as we were only there for two days. This hotel is also pet friendly! Saw a few pooches enjoying the courtyard, which was great. Reception staff were very friendly and helpful. Location is just far away enough from the city centre to not be in amongst it but all of 10-12 minute walk to the main street with restaurants, shops and supermarkets. The room we booked was very spacious and bathroom clean. Only downside with bathroom was shower glass wasn't wide enough so water would get everywhere on the bathroom floor, but this wasn't a huge deal. Overall a good stay.

dated building and rooms need attention. peel paint on entry to bathroom. Toilet seat that would not stay up, that I actually adjusted and fixed. just the small thongs that could be easily addressed would make stays more comfortable. The hotel has great character, but is perhaps going to lose the character and it be seen as shabby and dated. I'd love to come back here and see the improvements have brought the Mercure up to standard, whilst it retains its unique characteristics. Generally staff were efficient, without being over friendly.

Happy with everything except aircon which was not powerful enough to keep room comfortable for sleep at night. Also a bit noisy. Pleased you are providing work opportunities for young adults with special needs. Excellent breakfast; comfortable beds; quiet overall (except for a/c) which helps with good night's sleep. No pool which is surprising for a big premium hotel

Hotel is dated and tired but very clean and comfortable. It’s very good value as a more modern hotel would cost much more. We had lunch at the bistro and the chicken burgers were very average, dry chicken and borderline stale bread (this was why I didn’t give 5 stars ) Breakfast buffet however was outstanding, crispy hash browns (normally soggy and inedible at other buffets) , perfectly cooked Smokey bacon and tasty sausages. It is just over 1km from the city centre but that meant we found free parking on the street near the hotel. Would definitely stay again (would just avoid the bistro ).

We loved staying at this hotel! It was in a great location and there was a pub with a bistro in the grounds. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We had a king room which was very spacious. The hotel is nearly 100 years old but had all modern amenities while keeping the heritage look. We will be back!
