3 Waterfront Place, Port Melbourne VIC 3207, Australia
Restaurant
•Well, definite points awarded for a to-the-point, upfront moniker. Mr Hobson is a nautically themed restaurant and bar, found right on the beach. The menu too is nautical. Just as nautical as the digs. Luckily for the denizens of Port Melbourne (and countless tourists with deeper pockets than backpackers), Mr Hobson isn’t nautical enough to warrant tacky pirate or dolphin or fishing paraphernalia; this restaurant is classy, upmarket, and sophisticated. The furnishings are stylish, befitting the Port Melbourne clientele. The outdoor seating allows you to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Port Melbourne. Mr Hobson’s sibling is 3 Station Pier if that gives any explanation. Mr Hobson provides function venues for events of all sizes, all of which boast sweeping views of the bay, and the sunsets that go with a position right on the waterfront. It’s especially popular with weddings, launches, business dinners, and anniversaries. Mr Hobson is found at the very end of the 109 tram line in Port Melbourne, on Waterfront Place. Basically, it’s at the beginning of the pier and right on the beach. Melbourne city is a short drive away, as are St Kilda and Albert Park. With great food, lovely ambience and amazing location, it's no wonder why Mr Hobson rated high among the other restaurants in the area.

I recently visited this establishment, and I was extremely disappointed. The tables had piles of black dirt, and I noticed mould in the corners of the room. The toilets were filthy, with some still full of urine—clearly, they hadn’t been cleaned in a while. There were buckets scattered throughout the place to catch leaks from the ceiling, which is quite unappealing for diners. To add to the poor experience, when I ordered, the waiter handed me my tray to carry myself instead of helping me to my table, even though I was dining in and my hands were full. Additionally, there were no napkins available, and my coffee was served with spills, making the entire tray messy. The windows were dirty as well, which just added to the overall unpleasant atmosphere. It’s such a shame because this place is in a prime location, but the poor maintenance and lack of customer service below zero make it an experience I wouldn’t want to repeat.
It is well located at waterfrong in Port Melbourne. The restaurant has a beautiful interior design and atmosphere however, the bathroom area is not very well looked after and the one I used was out of soap. Pizza (I had Margherita) crust is so basic and at fast-food-level, at best, not restaurant quality as you would expect. Potato wedges were well made and tasty. Service was good except one of the waitresses, who I think was the head of the rest, was not so welcoming. No splitting bills which means if you go there with other families and kids, one has to pay for all then good luck finding out who had what and how much to pay.
Beautiful waterfront restaurant, the only one that's running now coz the others are under Reno. Nice large seating inside and a few tables outside. Just had a coffee and a sausage roll but wandered around a bit. The girls at the counter were really friendly and welcoming.
This used to be such a great establishment, but it is unfortunately no longer. Place is filthy, tables dirty, mould notable, umbrellas ripped, service poor and served the worst cheeseburger we've ever had. Buns were stale, toasted in an attempt to hide this, leaving it rock hard and just inedible. Charged full price for iced coffee, despite not having ice cream. So sad because the location was great! Won't be coming back here again 😕
We stopped in at Mr Hobsons while waiting to board a cruise. The location is in close proximity to station pier, making it an ideal location to grab a drink while you wait. We requested a coffee and an apple juice. Disappointingly, they did not have apple juice, so we had to make do with orange juice. Given that the location is at the port and you rely on the trade of cruise passengers, it is a bit surprising that stock is not arranged for delivery to align with what will be peak trade periods. The seating is predominately in the shade, but there are sections that are exposed to full sun.
