For the North Hobart location, this is a lovely hotel. The building itself is quite beautiful, dating back to the early 1900s, retaining much character and elegance. The staff are friendly and attentive. The rooms could do with a slight bit of sprucing up and some love, but that's not overly surprising given the age of the building. (Minor note: it was pretty cold when we visited, but we were very happy with the amount of heat the two room heaters provided.) Loved the location with the proximity of shops/cafes/cinema/restaurants/bars/pubs on the main strip, plus the Botanical gardens not far away. Certainly would stay here again if we were visiting the area.
Would I stay again.... No. Good location 10mins from Hobart town centre, the hotel is located in a beautiful old school building. That's the good news. Behind the facade, its not so good. We booked superior twin room, which includes a useless lounge area - the only tv is the bedroom, the only place to see the tv is by laying on the bed! The tv is bad, very cheap and nasty. Only the bed is worse. The mattress is way too soft (ok personal choice), and the base is falling apart - feels like you'd fall off any moment. Worse hotel bed ever experienced! Simple things make the difference - like wall hooks to hang wet coats, quality tea and coffee in the room, good size tea cups, a shower door that doesnt get stuck... Sadly the room didnt have any of these. Two for one drink offer at bar, draws you in, but with so many restrictions on its use its not worth it. Plenty of better places to eat and drink 10mins walk away in Elizabeth St. Enjoy!
The only real question is; would I stay there again? Erh, no. I have said repeatedly, do not let architects design rooms, particularly bathrooms. A nice big room with high ceilings(+), large bathroom (+), bench with sink (+), but (many negatives), bed with huge foot end which obscures the TV, the TV is cheap & really not worth even trying to use so woeful is the menu, NO powerpoints either side of the bed head (how can any serious hotel not have phone charging points near the bedhead), the room is not private because the windows open out to pedestrians, even the bathroom (no frosted glass, only hard to use blinds), there was a great opportunity to screen off the dunny easily, but no, full excrement smell is there for all to enjoy, the bench is too high and the sink is very "architectural" meaning it is too small and wrongly oriented, another guest welcome not used is the electric kettle in a cupboard and not on the bench. (Why make it hard for tired guests), I could go on but will finish with the shower, aah the shower, yet another example of design by an architect - looks impressive but practicality nosedives; no shelf for your own soap, crappy tile work, mould on the grout, an ineffective fan that doubles for dunny duty, a useless towel rail, ........... Like so many hotels, it falls short by poor design and execution. The staff were good, the restaurant nice but food taste experience pedestrian (but so are the tastes of many guests, to be fair), but the bed was comfortable.
Really lovely hotel. Was half the price of any other hotel for the number of nights we needed. Rooms were surprisingly spacious and absolutely spotless, and I'm very fussy. Besides the bedroom and very large bathroom there was a little sitting room which I wasn't expecting so that was great. Staff were very courteous and helpful. We were able to leave our bags there after checking out as our flights weren't until the evening. It was a bit of a walk to the city centre, about 20 mins, we didn't mind as there were lots of interesting little shops on Elizabeth Street leading down into the centre. If mobility is an issue an uber is only a few dollars to the centre and there is a bus stop just outside also. There were some slightly uneven outdoor steps up to our room which was fine for us but might be a struggle if mobility is an issue so maybe check with staff before finalising booking.
The service was just excellent. I arrived early...about midday and they went out of their way to place me in a room. The receptionist was so nice and friendly and accommodating. The room was spacious and very clean. The location was quiet. I slept well.
