Reviews for Rydges Canberra

I don't usually write reviews but I will today. I stayed at this motel as my conference was being held here. I enjoyed my stay however I have to say that the negative reviews are pretty spot on. The good: very comfortable bed with sparkling white clean sheets. The catering for the conference was very good also. The bad: very crowded, small room for conference with 0.5 m between all the tables in front and behind. The hallways were dark, the furnishings dated, thread bare in places, fabric on restaurant chairs all stained terribly. Pink mould on bathroom tiles, rooms not cleaned well. Paint chipped everywhere. However, it is a good location. I got the impression that the staff try hard. I think the problem is that the motel is old, huge and difficult and expensive to maintain. Avoid the breakfast buffet.

I was staying here for a conference nearby. The location is convenient. Rooms are dated and maintenance is below average as per photos. A/C unit is very old. Given the price, it’s not good value for money. Breakfast buffet is well below the standard I would expect for $34. While it’s convenient it’s relatively low quality and not value for money. On the day I had breakfast it was difficult to find a table that had been cleared of dirty dishes. There were stacked dishes everywhere and it was difficult to find a place that was clean enough to eat. Clearly not enough staff to do basic jobs. Evening meal was OK. The menu is not extensive but it has some reasonable selections. Staff were generally pleasant. I didn’t use any of the facilities so I can’t comment on these. I’ve requested copies of my receipts multiple times now. Still waiting after nearly two weeks. When I spoke to the agent earlier today, she advised she would email them later this evening. Couldn’t do it now, she was too busy. Clearly the hotel is understaffed with inadequately trained personnel. Not what I expect for $350-400/night.

Avoid Rydges Canberra! We had a terrible experience. Upon arrival, while waiting to check in, my 3-year-old son sat near the fireplace and unintentionally touched the glass surrounding it, burning his hand. The surface was extremely hot! This fireplace is not safe for children, and a small warning sign at the top is insufficient for kids who can’t read. It should either be turned off or properly barricaded to prevent access for kids. After filing a complaint and spending 1 hour treating my son’s burn, we went to dinner. Upon returning, we discovered the air conditioning in our room wasn’t working—it was freezing outside (+3C). When I reported it to reception, they didn’t change our room and only provided a small heater that couldn’t warm the space. Overall, a terrible experience.

Rooms were dirty and rundown. I changed rooms because my first one was unclean and second one was also bad. I wiped down all the handles and surfaces, which were disgusting (see picture of dirt from fridge handle - and that was cleaner than the cupboard!), and there were bloodstains on the mattress protector which you could see through sheets. Bathroom wasn't cleaned properly- bodywash empty and left on shelf to be refilled. Others in my group staying there had similar issues. I also had no phone in my room, so had to walk downstairs to kitchen to order roomservice. Despite being told that phone would be provided, none turned up. Food was expensive and not great - steak very overcooked (asked for medium). Only positive was that the bed and pillows were comfy. Wish I'd read the other reviews before booking. Do yourself a favour and book elsewhere. Thankfully my hotel in Sydney made up for it.

Food is nice but no table service for dinner at the prices you’re charging. Breakfast staff are friendly and busy but time to hire more staff tables are left dirty for ages 30 mins two tables haven’t been cleaned. Upgrade of the AC needed loud and not that good. Suites not worth paying price for. Outdated rooms Spa bath not fully working out of around 8 seats only two work Invest in a toilet brush. Not nice for the cleaners to do the dirty work Again food is nice on the expensive side, bars nice chairs are comfortable The rail on each floor is scary low when u have kids
