This is a very old hotel. The wallls are paper thin. It is lovely and comfortable in that old style but you can hear all the sounds from adjacent rooms, upstairs and downstairs. If you’re using this hotel just to snooze and go venture Canberra during daylight, then it is the perfect choice and value. My room (105) was above the gym: every morning, an avid runner starts thumping the treadmill at 7am. I am an early riser so it doesn’t bother me. When I checked in, the guests upstairs were having loud sex or something. I don’t begrudge someone having a good time, but I can hear every single bump on the bed. I called reception and they did pipe down. The staff are amazing. There is ample parking out front. Would I come back? Yes but definitely would have extra ear plugs.

A hotel oozing historic charm in a largely residential area near the Australian War Memorial. As an Accor Member who booked direct through their website, I was rewarded with a room upgrade to a deluxe 2 bedroom room. Room and bathroom was recently renovated and very well presented. Check in staff were friendly. Only problem with the room was the wooden floors have been carpeted over without being desqueaked first which means any movement during the night would wake the other person. The bathroom basin tap was loose and the shower head was leaking - both were reported on checkout. The hotel had a jazz/blues gig on the night we were staying and the courtyard area was very nice. The fish tanks in each of the wings were also cool. Parking is free and ample on the street so save your money. Bit disappointing to see all the dinner room service food trays still outside doors the following morning. Bistro food was top notch - see separate review.

My husband and I have stayed at this hotel on many occasions over the past 10 years as we love the atmosphere of this lovely old hotel, the rooms are spacious and modern, the beds are comfy. Have eaten in at their bistro restaurant which the food has been good on each occasion, as well as ordered room service which has been good. In the last couple of years they have imposed a $15 per day parking fee which I feel is a bit much when guests pay a decent rate for the room, and from next year the rate will almost double in price if you don’t prebook parking in advance. The past few years we have brought our dogs as they have pet friendly rooms with an enclosed courtyard for them which they love their holidays here. However on our recent stay we were in room 216 which was our first time in that room and found the courtyard was not enclosed like the other pet rooms, it was an open area with the external fence of the property which allowed our dogs walk along the back of other rooms and upon close inspection we found there to be a gap where near the entry/exit gate which our huskies would be able to squeeze through and escape the property. As a result we had to have our dogs on lead every time they went to the toilet which was an issue as they are not used to toileting on the lead. Not sure how previous guests managed their dogs in this room courtyard? We definitely will stay again as we are overall happy with this hotel but next time we will make sure that we don’t have room 216.

I visited for a conference and my husband and dog joined me for the trip. We had a wonderful time and the room was very comfortable and suitable for a small dog. The hotel has a few pet-friendly areas, having two people was helpful, as one could order meals etc, while the other sat with the dog. The staff were kind and helpful. We had a delightful stay.

The rooms are very large and roomy. The furnishings are dated but fit the Heritage listing. The carpets are tired but the beds are comfortable. The bathroom is large and clean and well equipped. Lovely to still have facewashers available.
