Firstly, I found the reception staff very accommodating. Check in was quick and efficient. I found myself in a room surrounded by school children on an excursion. I requested a room change and this occurred within 10 minutes. All my interactions with reception staff were positive. The room furnishings are old and tired, but I suspect are an attempt to align with the historical background of the hotel. The bed was comfortable and clean. The bathroom and shower were modern, shower pressure was good and the hot water came through quickly. The carpet in the room and corridors could use an upgrade, looking very grubby. I wore thongs when walking around in the room. As mentioned by others, used room service trays sit around in the corridors forever. There is a secure, key card gated, car park at the back of the hotel accessed from a side street. My parking was included, but I believe is $10 per night. It’s up to the guest to transport their luggage from car park to rooms themselves. Olims restaurant was awful! The furniture, food and service was what you would expect from a lower end pub in the burbs. The buffet breakfast was terrible! All hot food; scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, mushrooms, beans and hash browns were lukewarm at best. The toast was hot, but you cook that yourself. Spreads were out in their jars, person after person just poking their knives in. On the second morning I realised fried eggs are the go, they’re cooked to order so arrive HOT. Breakfast was included in my package, but I think it’s $26 for walk ins. It’s a 10 minute walk to the War Memorial and same to the city centre, but all other attractions are driving distance and buses are infrequent. Honestly, this place is okay, but I’m surprised Mercure is happy to have their brand out front. I guess it ticks the official 4 star boxes, but to me it’s more like 3 star accommodation and the “restaurant” is minus 3 stars.

1. Housekeeping Issue – Extremely Unprofessional On the evening of 7 October 2025, when we returned to our hotel room (Room 140), we noticed that the bathroom towels had been replaced, but the bed linens and other bedding had not been cleaned or made up at all. We went down to the front desk to raise the issue, but the staff’s communication skills were very poor. When we asked why the towels had been changed but the bed was left untouched, the receptionist hesitated and gave unclear answers, saying she was not sure and didn’t know whether anyone could come to fix it now. For a four-star hotel, this response was highly unprofessional. Not only did it fail to address the guest’s concerns, but it also showed a lack of empathy and accountability. Even though someone was eventually sent to make up the room, by that point our trust and confidence in the hotel were already damaged. This reflects a serious lack of housekeeping management, which should be the most basic professional standard in hotel operations. 2. Severe Sanitation Issue Near the Hotel Restaurant/Bar (Batman Street) The street behind the hotel’s restaurant and bar, Batman Street, has wastewater flowing openly with a strong, unpleasant odor. This raises serious concerns about the hotel’s food hygiene and safety standards, and we also question whether the situation complies with the local council’s wastewater disposal regulations. 3. Poor Room Maintenance – Windows Cannot Be Opened The room windows cannot be properly opened. Even if the building is older, basic maintenance and upkeep are still essential—and it’s clear that this has not been done. Overall Impression While there are other smaller issues we won’t list one by one, it’s clear that for a hotel of this standard and pricing, the experience and management fall far below expectations. This is not simply about money—it’s about professionalism and principles. We therefore reserve our right to lodge a formal complaint with the ACCC if necessary.

Excellent traditional style hotel. We had a lovely one night stay. Loved the family loft room - my kids were in a sofa bed and we were in nice big comfy bed upstairs. Bathroom had a bath which was lovely as I always love having a bath. Don’t bother paying for parking as the streets all the way around the hotel are free to park in. It would have been good to know this in advance. We tried calling 6 times in advance but nobody picked up so that’s why we rated service down. They also really struggled to keep up with a busy breakfast on a public holiday morning. Need another coffee machine ideally! Overall a great stay and would recommend it!

Beautiful old hotel with character, (showing some sighns of wear.) Large airy, well appointed, light filled room. Wonderful, smiling, very helpful staff. The food was great. A short 12-15 min easy walk to The Australian War Memorial. All accessible by wheelchair, and so worth the visit, ➕️ the on off City tour bus pick-up point is on the street, a few steps from the hotel entrance. Only drawback I felt, was that of the ramp access into the building, being too short and extremely steep it is unsafe for a wheelchair. All ramps inside though were very easily accessible, and manoeuvrable.

Great place to stay, easy walk to the National War Memorial. 24 hours reception and reasonably priced secure parking at the rear was reassuring. Bistro on site was very reasonably priced also and the food was excellent. Definitely our "go to" when we stay in Canberra next time. Plenty of quiet areas inside and outside in the courtyard to sit and read or enjoy a drink.
